Welsh Streets
CONSULTATION over the future of the Welsh
Streets is entering its final, important stages. 2 large-scale
public drop-in events are taking place at Toxteth Town Hall, giving
everyone in the community the chance to view the £15 million
neighbourhood regeneration plans for themselves, ask questions and
have their say.
The events, on Thursday, 6 September, 4pm to 7pm; and Saturday, 8
September 2012, 10pm to 3pm, form part of the final consultation for
the Welsh Streets scheme, which aims to rejuvenate housing
throughout the area.
The proposed scheme, delivered by the City Council and Liverpool
housing association Plus Dane Group, includes over 150 affordable,
high-quality new homes for the local community and new residents,
built to the highest standards. The properties, for rent and sale,
will provide a diverse mix of housing for the area, and will be
designed to be energy efficient and spacious, with many including
gardens.
The plans will also see the development of proposals to retain and
refurbish 32 terraced properties; 16 on Madryn Street and 16 in
Kelvin Grove. The City Council is launching a pilot scheme in
September to give the local community, working in partnership with a
lead organisation, the opportunity to take over and refurbish the
Madryn Street properties, which had previously been earmarked for
demolition; including 9 Madryn Street, the childhood home of Ringo
Starr.
Liverpool City Council's Cabinet Member for Housing, Councillor Ann
O'Byrne, said:- "These drop-in events are aimed at giving
everybody in the community the opportunity to see the Welsh Streets
plans for themselves and let us know what they think. These are
exciting times for the Welsh Streets and we are making sure the
community is fully involved at every step of the way. I'm looking
forward to residents turning out in large numbers at these final
consultation events so we can showcase the plans and capture as many
local voices as possible."
Running alongside the public drop-in events is a new website, which
residents can visit to find out more about the proposed scheme, look
at a range of plans and artist's impressions and leave feedback.
The plans for the Welsh Streets form part of the wider housing
renewal programme in the Princes Park neighbourhood which was
declared in 2005 for a period of up to 10 years. There are 2,500
properties within the renewal area and over 80% of the existing
properties are being retained.
People have until 20 September 2012 to submit comments and feedback
on the scheme. Following the consultation, a final
planning application will be submitted.
The Welsh Streets public drop-in events take place at Toxteth Town
Hall, 15 High Park Street, on Thursday, 6 September 2012, 4pm to
7pm; and Saturday, 8 September 2012, 10pm to 3pm. For

Nationwide
search for best unsigned Blues Musicians
IT has just been announced that entries for
this year's highly prestigious and nationwide competition; The New
Brunswick Battle of the Blues; will open on 1 October 2012. For a
3rd year the cream of unsigned bands and singer/songwriters is being
sought from across the UK and particularly from the North of England
where, organisers believe, the area's great blues talent deserves
higher recognition.
5 heats will take place around the country, with Northern heats
being held at the True Blues Club, Newton-le-Willows on 11th January
and Redcar Blues Club on 8 February 2012, although musicians are
welcome to enter any of the 5 heats. Heat winners plus a 'judges'
choice' will go head to head at the final in London in March 2013,
with the overall competition winner being taken out to play main
stage at the world renowned Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival in New
Brunswick, Canada, during September 2013.
Says Lisa Gagnon, who's organising the competition in the UK for New
Brunswick:- "Harvest Jazz & Blues is one of the world's great
music festivals. Once again we're thrilled to be offering this
chance to British blues musicians to play alongside the best of the
best. New Brunswick's capital Fredericton, where the festival is
held, is a wonderful place to visit at any point in the year, but at
Harvest time the atmosphere is electric! The winners will play gigs
on the Festival's main stage and have the chance to make contact
with some of the all time blues greats who come here from across
North America and indeed the world. And we'll even take our winners
whale watching, sea kayaking and sightseeing
– all expenses paid, of course."
Last year's winners, Groove-A-Matics from Gateshead, said this of
the competition:- "It's a fantastic opportunity for emerging
or established British blues artists to raise their profile and play
on a world stage at this brilliant festival; as well as experiencing
the wonders of the Canadian province of New Brunswick."
Interested bands and singer/songwriters are invited to register
initially at:-
tourismnewbrunswick.co.uk,
between 1 October and 30 November 2012. Artists will need to
demonstrate the ability to produce new and original work, though
some covers are permitted.
To qualify, they will need to be
unsigned at the time of the competition (including the final).
Musicians may enter whichever heat best suits them; choose from
Newton-le-Willows in the North West, Redcar in the North East,
Billericay in the South East, Hove in the South and Cupar, Scotland. |
