Designs on a new
award
BUSINESSES in Liverpool's
Stanley Street Quarter have got designs on a prestigious new award.
The Stanley Street Quarter design awards will recognise those firms
which have improved the look of their premises and contributed to
the growing reputation of the quarter.
Nominations are now being sought for the awards which are aimed at
enhancing and promoting the area.
Stanley Street Quarter, which includes Stanley Street, Cumberland
Street, Temple Lane, Temple Street and Eberle Street, has many
listed buildings and is in a conservation area. Many businesses have
looked to this heritage in refurbishing their buildings. Others have
sought to provide a more contemporary setting.
They follow the implementation of acclaimed new signage which
supports the city's efforts to tap into the potential economic
benefits of one of the most diverse quarters in the city centre. And
they complement the work undertaken over the last year to develop a
vision and identity, a programme of street markets and other events
for the Stanley Street Quarter, affording people and businesses the
chance to:- "do something different on Stanley Street."
Councillor Nick Small, City Council cabinet member for employment,
enterprise and skills, said:- "It is only right that that
those businesses which have invested in their premises and enhanced
the look of the quarter should be recognised.
These awards will encourage good design and make Stanley Street even
more attractive for those who work or live there and to visitors."
The report has been welcomed by businesses in the area. Candice
Fonseca, proprietor of Delifonseca, said:- "The area has some
great buildings and those businesses who further enhance the
streetscape should be encouraged. Being such a mixed use quarter
it's a challenge for the different businesses to get their messages
across whilst enhancing the overall area and those that succeed
should be applauded."
Andy Kerr from the Liverpool LGB&T said:- "The Quarter will
increasingly come to represent the public face of LGBT Liverpool to
our communities and to the rest of the world. We need to make sure
that our first class designs look and feel as engaging and welcoming
as we are ourselves!"
To nominate your choice, please 'like' the Stanley Street Quarter
Facebook page
and vote on the poll, or tweet @StanleyStQtr. A steering group made
up of local representatives, the City Council and other partners
will decide on the winner at the end of September 2012.
The Stanley Street Quarter design awards have been sponsored by
Liverpool Vision and will be presented in October 2012.

Have your say on
Welsh Streets plans
LOCAL residents are being
invited to connect with the exciting plans for the Welsh Streets and
have their say about the plans. A new
website,
has been set up, to give the community the chance to find out more
about the proposed £15 million housing scheme, look at a range of
plans and artist's impressions and leave feedback.
People have until 20 September 2012 to leave comments, with
everything submitted forming part of the final consultation for the
scheme, which aims to rejuvenate housing throughout the Welsh
Streets.
The launch of the website follows a community consultation workshop
in Toxteth on 23 August 2012, which gave residents the opportunity to
share their views, feedback and stories.
And it paves the way to two larger public drop in events, which will
be held at Toxteth Town Hall, 15 High Park Street, on Thursday, 6
September 2012, 4pm to 7pm; and Saturday, 8 September 2012, 10pm to 3pm.
The City Council's Cabinet Member for Housing, Councillor Ann
O'Byrne, said:- "Our community workshops proved to be a real
success, bringing the community together and giving us an invaluable
insight into what they think about our plans for the Welsh Streets.
We want to build on that and ensure that the voices of local people
continue to be heard throughout this consultation period. This
website is another avenue for people to find out about the
proposals, see visuals of the scheme and have their say. We
believe that these plans will transform the Welsh Streets,
revitalising housing in the area. It's vital that local people are
on-board with what we are proposing. Everything we are doing; from
the website, to our workshops, to the forthcoming public drop-in
events - is about making sure this continues to be a project with
the community at its heart."
The proposed scheme, delivered by the City Council and Liverpool
housing association Plus Dane Group, includes over 150 affordable,
high-quality new homes for the local community and new residents,
built to the highest standards. The properties, for rent and sale,
will provide a diverse mix of housing for the area, and will be
designed to be energy efficient and spacious, with many including
gardens.
The plans will also see the development of proposals to retain and
refurbish 32 terraced properties; 16 on these on Madryn Street and
16 in Kelvin Grove. Liverpool City Council will launch a pilot
scheme in September to give the local community working in
partnership with a lead organisation the opportunity to take over
and refurbish the 16 Madryn Street properties which had previously
been earmarked for demolition; including 9 Madryn Street, the
childhood home of Ringo Starr.
The plans for the Welsh Streets form part of the wider housing
renewal programme in the Princes Park neighbourhood which was
declared in 2005 for a period of up to 10 years. There are 2,500
properties within the renewal area and over 80% of the
existing properties are being retained.
Following the consultation, a final planning application will be
submitted.
