Labour Leader Ed Miliband backs campaign for lifesaving Defibrillators in public buildings

THE leader of the Labour Party has written to Cllr Jake Morrison to offer his support for The Oliver King Foundation, setup by the father of 12 year old Oliver King, Mark.

The Rt Hon Ed Miliband MP said:- "Access to a defibrillator would save lives. On behalf of the Labour Party, I am happy to support your campaign."

Last week the Government responded to The Oliver King Foundation e-petition calling for all schools & public buildings to have lifesaving Defibrillators.

Talks were held on Wednesday, 29 November 2012, in Westminster.

Mark King & Cllr Jake Morrison met with:- Labour Party Leader Ed Miliband, Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham MP, Liverpool MPs Maria Eagle, Steve Rotheram, Stephen Twigg & Luciana Berger, along with Rosie Cooper MP.

Other parliamentarians also offered support for the campaign:- Ex-deputy prime minister Lord John Prescott & Ex-Chancellor Alastair Darling MP.

Mark & Jake also 'bumped in to' Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt who wished campaigners 'good luck' with the campaign, and a photograph was taken.

The Oliver King Foundation was set up following the death of Oliver King, a pupil at King David High School in Childwall, in March 2011. He tragically died during a swimming lesson from Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS). SADS takes the lives of 12 young people aged between 12 and 35 years old EVERY week.

It is estimated that 270 children die of a sudden cardiac arrest while at school in the UK every year, and is the same medical condition that struck former Bolton Wanderers footballer Fabrice Muamba last season, forcing his retirement from the game. In October The Oliver King Foundation handed over the 1st Defibrillator to Pinehurst Primary School, as part of a scheme which will see all 122 Liverpool Primary School's receive this lifesaving equipment as part of a £102,640 project.

Oliver's dad Mark King said:- "We had a fantastic productive day in Parliament. We have 73 days left of our e-petition. I urge people to sign this before we run out of time."

Councillor Jake Morrison, Patron of The Oliver King Foundation and creator of the e-petition, said:- "When I spoke to Ed Miliband's office and they offered his support, I was over the moon. It is fantastic that we have received support from a senior MP. We don't have long left on the e-petition. We took advice today from parliamentarians, and we will use that in the campaign over the next 3 months."
