Liverpool's new
student accommodation scheme reaches significant milestone
THE construction of a new
multi-storey student accommodation block, located in the Ropewalks
area of Liverpool and carried out by VINCI Construction UK, has
reached a significant milestone with the completion of the concrete
frame.
The £10m development for Iliad Cosgrove will accommodate 261
students in 225 flats, which include spacious kitchen and lounge
areas. Amenities include an on-site laundry and a games and common
room for the exclusive use of residents.
Peter Dodd, Project Manager, VINCI Construction UK, Building
Division – North West, said:- "It is exciting to see the new
student accommodation block take shape. The completion of the
concrete frame indicates the project is progressing on schedule.
This is due to the collaborative between the client, the
construction team and our supply chain."
Joe Cross, Iliad, Construction Director, said:- "The new
development builds upon Iliad's long pedigree of urban regeneration
in the City of Liverpool and specifically in the Ropewalks area."
Tim Groom, Architect, Formroom, said:- "This development will
set a new standard in terms of specification and design, with
interiors promoting more of a boutique hotel style which should
impress even the most discerning of students. The development really
exemplifies the next generation of contemporary student
accommodation."
Once completed in summer 2013, the new student accommodation block
will provide a mixed-use City living environment which is in close
proximity to Liverpool's John Moores University, Liverpool Community
College, the University of Liverpool, and an array of vibrant
restaurants and bars. |

Inspiration for Runshaw Students
PARALYMPIAN and silver
medallist Graeme Ballard visited Runshaw Adult College this week to
offer advice and inspiration to students as part of the College's 'Building
Resilience' enrichment theme.
Graeme, 33, and a former Runshaw student, suffers from cerebral
palsy, yet with his determination and passion for sport achieved the
coveted silver medal for the 100 metre sprint in the London 2012
Paralympic games. Graeme, together with his mum, was invited to visit the Foundation
Degree in Graphic Design course where students are working on a
Disability Legacy Project; a nationwide work experience project to
help keep the momentum going after last summer's Paralympic Games
and in particular, encouraging disadvantaged children to join
locally run sports clubs and increase disability provision.
Graeme spoke about his journey into sport, from the sporting
challenges he faced as a child with a disability, through to
becoming a Paralympic athlete. He then answered students'
pre-prepared questions before giving individual feedback on their
work.
Jan Moon, course leader for the Foundation Degree in Graphic Design
said:- "It was just fantastic to have Graeme tell his story,
he was an inspiration to all. It is important that our students have
an insight into who they are designing for, and their meeting with
Graeme and his mum enabled them to see his perspective. They gave
invaluable individual feedback to our students on their initial
design ideas, and it was very clear that to Graeme, sport should be
for everyone and that it should be fun."
Graeme's next visit was with GCSE English students who, as part of
their course, are looking at spoken conversation and the
similarities and difference in language features.
Sue Melling, GCSE course leader and Graeme's former tutor,
commented:- "The students took part in a question and answer
session with Graeme about motivation and resilience which we have
discussed during enrichment. The students really benefited from
Graeme's visit, as not only did they analyse spoken language
features used by Graham and peers during the session, but also
learnt that with motivation and resilience you can achieve your
goals. They were inspired by what he had achieved in a short time. "
Graeme is now training intensively for the World Games this summer,
and we hope to welcome him back to the College soon to offer further
inspiration to students.
