NSPCC thanks
locals for a record-breaking Letter from Santa
CHILDREN'S charity, the
NSPCC is thanking its supporters across the region for helping to
raise a record-breaking £1.82m (including Gift Aid) during the
festive season and helping to support many local children and
families who need a little extra help.
The charity had yet another successful year with the festive
fundraising initiative 'Letter from Santa' which gives people
the chance to send someone special a magical letter from santa for a
suggested donation of £5, and across the North West over 28,534
children received a personalised and illustrated letter delivered by:-
'reindeer mail'.
Janette Drew, community fundraising manager for the NSPCC, said:-
"We want to say a big thank you to everyone who took part in this
year's Letter from Santa campaign, helping us to raise an incredible
amount of money, which will go towards supporting our vital projects
and services to protect vulnerable children. £1.82m is the most
we've ever raised though this campaign and we simply wouldn't be
able to continue to run our services without the generous support
from members of the public."
The money raised will help the NSPCC to save, change and improve the
lives of children all year round through its local community
services, a helpline for adults worried about a child and ChildLine
– the UK's free, confidential 24-hour helpline and online service
dedicated to children and young people.

Mersey Tunnel
Affected By False Alarms
THE
Kingsway Tunnel, also known as the Wallasey Tunnel had to be closed
for more than 2 hours on Tuesday, 29 January 2013, after a fire
alarm went off. The tunnel was then closed in both directions at
around 7:20pm, as fire crews attended the scene, in an under-deck
pump rooms, at mid-river. In a statement sent to us by Mersey Travel
who run the tunnel they said:- "Emergency procedures were
instigated, including the attendance of the Mersey Fire and Rescue
Service. Following investigations the incident was identified as a
false alarm. The Tunnel re-opened to traffic before 10pm."
If you
want to find out more about the Emergency Evacuation plans, the
Mersey Travel website has a very good familiarisation video on it,
explaining all about what would happen if you are in the tunnel and
an emergency was declared. To see the video go to:-

The page also has many other useful features from closure notices to
a Dangerous Goods Database.
Barclays to
relocate some jobs to Liverpool
THE UK bank Barclays has
angered the trade union Unite after its an announcement to close a
call centre in Manchester, with the loss of 475 jobs. The banking
giant has stressed that there will be no change to its head count as
a result of the closure in Manchester, in September 2013, as new
jobs were being created in Liverpool and Sunderland. Adding to the
anger as a statement that was made by a spokesman for the banks
Telephone Contact Center at Salford Quays, that "some might
want to take a voluntary redundancy option." Dominic Hook,
who is Unite's National Officer has told the press that:- "We
will be doing everything possible to protect the jobs of our members
and we expect the bank to do everything possible to avoid forced
redundancies.. Just as we learn about the huge bonuses at the top of
the bank, frontline staff are having their jobs put at risk."
So does this affect you and is this good news for Liverpool, who
have in resent years suffered harder than most City's from market
changes? Email your views to:-
