Liverpool
receives upgraded dental hospital
IHP, is a joint venture
between VINCI Construction UK and Sir Robert McAlpine, has completed
a £1.8m scheme to repair the Royal Liverpool University Dental
Hospital in Merseyside. The contract, under the ProCure 21+
Framework, was a one year project which involved structural repairs
to the façade of the 1960s building. The contractor worked in a live
working environment to replace 500 windows whilst deep cleaning and
redecorating the elevators of the hospital.
The canopy and the front entrance were also
extensively cleaned and upgraded.
Mark Thomas, Regional Director, IHP, Building Division – North West,
said:- "The structural repairs to the Dental Hospital will
modernise and maintain the facility for the patients they care for
and the local residents of Liverpool. The scheme meant a lot to the
local residents as the redevelopment reflects the regeneration of
the area."
Michelle Fleming, Directorate Manager, Royal
Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust,
said:-
"Liverpool
University Dental Hospital is collocated with Royal Liverpool
University Hospital, and as the building is here to stay for some
considerable years it is essential that we maintain the building and
environment to support staff and provide quality care to patients.
Of all the potential inconvenience from such a big project,
'drilling' noise was something we needed to be particularly
sensitive to for the hundreds of patients who attend the Dental
Hospital every day. The project benefitted from a team with
established working relationships developed on previous projects
and, when negotiation was needed, there was a real sense of everyone
wanting to get it right for patients and staff."

and charges are a direct result of this operation. I would like to
take this opportunity to remind residents to make sure their
properties are secure both during the evening and overnight even
when they are at home. We all need to be vigilant. If you see anyone

HMS Illustrious
visits Liverpool for possibly the last time
Photographs by Ian
Fairbrother
THE HMS Illustrious,
nickname "Lusty" by her crew was in the river Mersey,
on what is likely to be her final visit before withdrawal. The
23,000 ton helicopter carrier had been berthed at the Cruise Liner
Terminal on Liverpool's waterfront since St. Valentine's Day, 14
February, on a farewell visit to the City. The 23,000 gross ton,
Olympus Gas Turbine Engine powered aircraft carrier is the Royal
Navy's largest and oldest warship, and will be the last of her type
to sail. Her visit was meant to re-affirm the Royal Navy's
long-standing links with the area, ahead of the forthcoming Battle
of the Atlantic 70th Anniversary events, which will take place in
May 2013. "On Friday, 15 February 2013, 253 engineering
students from a range of local schools, colleges and universities
including Wirral Met College, Kirkham Grammar School, KGV Southport,
Southport College and Liverpool University were treated to a 4 hour
engineering symposium, which looked at a wide range of applications
for engineering skills. Also, over Saturday and Sunday, the carrier
threw her 'doors' open to the public. Almost 6,000 people passed
across the gangway on both of the days." said a MOD
spokesman to us. "It was sad to see HMS Illustrious as she
left Liverpool for the last time, as she pulled away from Liverpool
Cruise Terminal in style. It was good to see so many people watching
her head out of the river." said one of the former crew
members, who had come to see her leave. Now the public's attention
will be moving to the 5 days of events, running over 24 May to 28
May 2013, from services of thanksgiving, parades, demonstrations,
flying displays and a gathering of around 2 dozen warships from
around the world. "Liverpool, over World War 2 housed the
Atlantic Command and also covered the Western Approaches, so it is
fitting to see Liverpool at the centre of the commemoration events.
It is with a considerable tinge of sadness that we leave Liverpool
for what might be the last time. We have all been made to feel
incredibly welcome. Liverpool has always lived up to its reputation
as one of the friendliest, most vibrant and places to visit. I know
that the forthcoming Battle of the Atlantic commemorations will
further tighten the bonds between the Royal Navy and this great
maritime City. I am sure that the Fleet Flagship HMS Bulwark and the
all the other ships involved will be afforded the same great welcome
as we have had for the Battle of the Atlantic commemoration events."
said Capt Connell in a statement.
