Junior Doctors
to run Liverpool Half Marathon for the Royal
2 doctors from BBC 3
documentary series 'Junior Doctors' are running the Liverpool
Half Marathon on, Sunday, 17 March 2013, to raise money for the Royal
Liverpool University Hospital. Tristan Townsend and Jen Whiteley are both first year junior doctors at the Royal, where the
series was filmed.
In the series Tristan, a 29 year old father of one from St Albans,
was based in the Clinical Gerontology department of the hospital. 25
year old former Liverpool University student, Jen, was based on the
surgical wards where people are cared for prior to or following
surgery. Both Tristan and Jen will be running alongside two
other junior doctors from the Royal, both of whom are looking to
raise as much money as possible for the hospital's R Charity.
Tristan said:- "I completed a 10k back in
October and I wanted to set myself another challenge, so it made
sense to raise money for the Royal in the process. My
colleagues and I are extremely proud to be a part of the Royal and
want to raise money to help improve the care and treatment patients
and their families receive whilst with us. I have been running
every Sunday and playing football with the other junior doctors on
Thursdays so hopefully I am fit enough!"
Jen said:- "I am really enjoying my time at the
Royal and everyone has been incredibly supportive, so I wanted to
give something back to the hospital. When this half marathon was
suggested it seemed like the perfect way of raising money for a
brilliant cause. I am of course a little nervous about the
half marathon itself, but running alongside my fellow junior doctors
will definitely help me to push through the pain and complete the 13
miles!"
The money raised by Tristan, Jen and the other junior doctors will
be used to enhance the quality of care and services for patients and
their families both in the existing hospital, and in the new Royal
which is expected to open in 2017.
The Liverpool Half Marathon is taking place on Sunday, 17 March 2013, if
you would like to sponsor Tristan, Jen and their colleagues you can

Consultation
over childcare plans
CONSULTATION is taking
place over plans to safeguard the future of four childcare nurseries
in Liverpool. Liverpool City Council has decided to sell the
child care businesses that run from Garston, Tuebrook, Wavertree and
Knotty Ash Children's Centres as going concerns.
They are costing hundreds of thousands of pounds to subsidise due to
historical reasons related to how they were set up, coupled with the
number of vacant places. The Council can't afford to keep them
running as it has to find £149 million of savings over the next 4
years.
The hope is that children and staff will simply transfer to the new
owners, so there is minimal disruption. It will not affect other
Children's Centres services.
Councillor Jane Corbett, Cabinet member for Education and Children's
Services, said:- "We could have simply proposed to close the
child care businesses but we are mindful that this would cause a
huge amount of disruption and distress for parents, carers, children
and staff. By selling them we will be able to make sure
they stay open, and make the best of a very difficult financial
situation."
Community consultation meetings are taking place at each of the
centres on the following dates: -
Tuebrook Children's Centre, Lower Breck Road: Tuesday 19 March from
6pm – 7pm
Garston Children's Centre, Banks Road: Thursday 21 March from 2pm -
3pm
Knotty Ash Children's Centre, Dovecot Place: Tuesday 26 March from
10am – 11am
Information on all the meetings can also be found at:-
liverpool.gov.uk/Council/consultation,
or by calling one of the four centres.
The consultation is taking place until Tuesday, 16 April 2013, and
views can also be
emailed
or by writing to:- Child Care Businesses Consultation, c/o Children's
Centre Team (Room 231), Municipal Buildings, Dale Street, Liverpool
L2 2DH.
It is hoped a final decision will be made in July, with the centres
transferring over in September.
Paddington and
One Stop team up again to support children's charity
PADDINGTON Bear and One
Stop are again teaming up in 2013 to mobilise support for the UK
children's charity, Action Medical Research. From 15 March
2013 to
15 May 2013, all One Stop shops are placing Paddington-themed collection
boxes on their countertops to raise valuable funds. The nation's
favourite bear is the mascot of the charity which finds and funds
vital research for sick babies and children.
One Stop is a retail convenience business with approximately 600
shops across the England and Wales. Paddington Bear is calling
on customers to again dig deep and help exceed last year's
impressive result of over £25,000 raised.
Paddington says:- "Thank for helping in 2012 and please be
kind and generous to Action Medical Research again in 2013. They
really do some amazing work funding the very best research for
babies and children and they are my favourite charity!"
Tony Reed, chief executive One Stop says:- "One Stop is proud
to again support the vital work that Action Medical Research find
and fund. Our key focus is being the best neighbourhood store for
our customers, which is why we're helping to make a real difference
to local communities by supporting this charity. The funds raised by
the collection boxes will help the children's charity to continue to
fund medical breakthroughs that help sick and disabled children, an
area that continues to be underfunded in the UK."
Action Medical Research has been funding medical breakthroughs since
it began in 1952. The charity is currently supporting work around
Down syndrome, epilepsy, sickle cell disease, and diabetes, as well
as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect
children. |
