Hospital
pharmacy welcomes international students
5 pharmacy students from
the United States and Spain have been honing their skills and
helping with patient care at Southport and Formby District General
Hospital.
They are 2 Americans, Ashley Cortright and Matthew Smith, from
Wingate University, North Carolina, and 3 Spaniards, Mikel
Urretabizkaia, Laia Castro and Idoia Martinez, students at the
University of the Basque Country.
The international placements, which are paid for by the students
themselves, form part of their studies towards their degree
qualification.
The Basque students are completing a 6 month placement and the 2
Americans are part way through a 6 week visit.
Chief Pharmacist Adrian Brown said:- "It's been a pleasure to
have the five of them with us because the placements are of mutual
benefit. They help my team on a day-to-day basis in the
department as well as giving useful feedback from a different
perspective on the way we work."
The placements are now annual fixture in the Pharmacy calendar and
Adrian is looking forward to welcoming more visitors later in the
year.
Birkenhead man jailed for railway sexual offences
A Birkenhead man has been jailed for 2 years
after being found guilty of exposure, outraging public decency and
breaching a sexual offences prevention order (SOPO). Jonathan
Davies, of Holborn Hill, Birkenhead, appeared at Liverpool Crown
Court on Friday, 12 April 2013, having pleaded guilty at an earlier
hearing. The court heard Davies (37) had travelled on a number of
trains during the early part of 2013 committing acts of indecency
during the journeys. The 1st offence took place on 15 January 2013,
as a 21 year old woman travelled from Liverpool Lime Street to
Bebington. As the train left Hamilton Square station, Davies
approached the woman, sat opposite her and exposed himself. Just
over a week later, on 24 January 2013, Davies travelled from Hooton
to Liverpool and sat opposite a woman travelling alone. He then put
his hand down his trousers and touched himself inappropriately,
though did not expose himself to the woman. 4 days later, Davies
exposed himself to another woman as he travelled on a Wirral-bound
train from Liverpool Lime Street. Chief Inspector Neil Moffatt
said:- "British Transport Police worked closely with
Mereseyrail and Merseyside Police to view CCTV and identify Davies.
He was arrested on 7 February 2013 and was later identified by a
number of women as the man responsible for the offences. BTP and
Merseyside Police built a strong case against Davies and the lengthy
sentence received at court reflects the seriousness of the offence.
Though Davies made no attempt to touch or assault any of the women,
his actions made them feel extremely uncomfortable and left them
fearing for their safety. This case clearly demonstrates BTP and
Merseyside Police will take swift and firm action against those who
commit sexual offences and will have no hesitation in putting them
before the courts." |

Cathedral sets
extra challenge for 2013 Photography Competition
LIVERPOOL Cathedral has set
a new challenge for its 2013 photography competition; it is inviting
photographers of all ages and abilities to submit not just, 1 but 2 images.
The 2013 competition allows photographers to showcase even more of
their work and brings in the added challenge of choosing contrasting
images to suit this year's theme - Liverpool - City of Contrasts. It
is believed to be the 1st photography competition in the North
West to ask photographers to submit 2 pieces of work as 1 entry.
Possible interpretations include the contrast between day and night,
old and new, architecture, people, or the various activities that
happen in a single space in the City.
Judges for this year are renowned photographer Mike McCartney
(chair), award-winning former Echo photographer Martin Birchall,
Sandra Penketh (Director of Art Galleries for National Museums
Liverpool) and renowned Liverpool artist Anthony Brown.
People can enter photographs in two categories - Contrasts in the
Hope Street Area and Contrasts in the City Centre and both
categories accept junior (up to age 17) and adult entries. People
can enter more than one category. Rules and entry forms are
available from the Cathedral's welcome desk, by post or download
from:-
www.liverpoolcathedral.org.
Eryl Parry, Director of Enterprise for Liverpool Cathedral said:-
"The entries to our competition get better every year, so we
decided it was time to set a new challenge. We have introduced an
element or curation - we want photographers to pair up contrasting
images which for them sum up our City's vibrant and sometimes
surprising contrasts. Liverpool is such a diverse City that there is
plenty of choice for thought-provoking subject matter. I am sure it
will make for our most fascinating exhibition of entries yet."
All entries will go on display at the Cathedral between 12 September
to 15
September 2013 and members of the public will be invited to choose the
'People's
Winner' alongside the prizes awarded by the judges. Prizes for
the 2013 competition include hotel stays, theatre and exhibition
tickets, meals, photographic workshops and tours. Commended and
winning entries will then go on display between 7 September to 28
October 2013.
