Liverpool flies
the flag for Lancashire
LIVERPOOL Cricket Club has
recently presented Liverpool's new Lord Mayor, Councillor Gary
Millar, with the Lancashire County Cricket Club Flag.
Following their win in 2011 it was agreed that flag would be flown
at the Town Hall whenever Lancashire County Cricket Club plays in
Liverpool; and the new Lord Mayor has given his full backing to
carrying on this tradition.
Accepting the flag from John Mountford, a director at the Liverpool
Cricket Club, Lord Mayor, Councillor Gary Millar said:- "I am
delighted to be receiving this flag on behalf of the City. We will
be honoured to fly it whenever the Lancashire County Cricket Club
plays in Liverpool. It is fantastic that we can show support
for such great sporting events and, hopefully by doing so we can
encourage as many people as possible to get out and about to watch
these matches, enjoy the sunshine and cheer on their local club."
Part of the Lord Mayor's duties is to be Patron of the Liverpool
Cricket Club and, accordingly, they are more than happy to help with
the charity work undertaken by the serving Lord Mayor. Not only did
members of the Cricket Club give a fantastic welcome to the Lord
Mayor they also managed to sell a large number of his recently
produced Battle of the Atlantic wartime hits souvenir CD making a
great contribution to the Lord Mayor's charities.
The decision made by Liverpool City Council noted with delight the
success of Lancashire County Cricket Club in becoming County
Champions for 2011. Council also noted with particular pride that
the majority of Lancashire's "Home" County Championship
matches were played in Liverpool.
Therefore in order to suitably mark this achievement it was decided
that:- "Council calls for the Lancashire County Cricket Club
Flag to be flown from Liverpool Town Hall, as other authorities such
as Preston City Council and South Ribble Council have done. Equally,
as recognition that Liverpool Cricket Club is one of the homes of
Lancashire County Cricket Club, Council calls for the flag to be
flown from the Town Hall on future occasions when our local county
side are playing in the City."
Victory on transparency rules for
the extractive industries spurs on Euro MPs determination to tackle
tax avoidance
ON 12 June 2013, with the
adoption of new transparency rules for the extractive and logging
industries, Euro MP Arlene McCarthy has said:- "Given the
momentum building around the issue of transparency we now intend to
table amendments to the non-financial reporting directive. The
European Parliament has long held the position that there is a need
for country-by-country reporting for all sectors to tackle tax
avoidance and the current scandals involving multinational
corporations like Google, Amazon and Starbucks, have reinforced the
need for greater tax transparency. A recent survey revealed that 85%
of those surveyed say that it is currently too easy for
multinational corporations to avoid tax and 8 out of 10 want to see
multinational accounts made more transparent and publicly available.
Now is the time to act and I am delighted that the European
Commission has given the Parliament its full support on this issue."

Huge savings
through new highways and streets contract
A new Council deal promises
to improve street cleansing and road maintenance; and will save the
local authority £33 million, helping protect key local services in
Liverpool.
Liverpool City Council has awarded Amey its streetscene contract,
covering highways and street cleaning. Amey has made a
commitment to create 140 apprenticeships over the life of the nine
year agreement, giving unemployed people the chance of on the job
training and a career.
In addition to highway maintenance and street cleaning, the contract
covers street lighting, inspection and maintenance of roads, gully
cleaning and gritting, as well as improved cleansing , fly tipping
removal, tackling graffiti and fly-posting, highway weed control and
environmental education.
Councillor Tim Moore, cabinet member for climate change and
transport, said:- "Keeping our roads well maintained and
streets clean are a major priority, but cuts in funding from central
government mean it is more important than ever that we receive the
best possible value for money service from our contractors.
The millions of pounds we are saving each year will enable us to
protect other vital services and shield the most vulnerable as much
as we possibly can.
We are convinced Amey will deliver top quality services, and have
been particularly impressed with their commitment to developing
employment opportunities for local people."
Amey has committed to spending 90% of its budget locally, with
particular support for small and medium enterprises.
Councillor Steve Munby, cabinet member for living environment and
localism, added:- "The new contract will enable us to meet the
Mayoral pledge to make Liverpool, a greener and cleaner City.
We are committed to continually improve these services. The new
contract allows for innovation but also adds social value to the
services provided, by making sure as much of the company's spend as
possible is invested locally."
Investment in sophisticated new IT systems and other equipment will
help achieve the savings.
Mel Ewell, Chief Executive for Amey, said:- "I am delighted Amey
has been awarded these 2 contracts. Liverpool is one of the UK's
most distinctive cities and our vision for the service is to deliver
a best value and innovative approach to improving the reliability of
the road network and the cleanliness of the streets. We are looking
forward to working with the Council and have focused our approach on
supporting the Mayoral pledges to make Liverpool one of the UK's
best kept cities."
Amey was chosen after an exhaustive tendering and evaluation
process. Staff currently employed on existing highways and
street cleansing contracts will move across to Amey. The 2
contracts worth a total over 9 years of £113 million represent a
saving of £33 million compared to the existing arrangements.
The new contracts will start on 1 July 2013.
