Another Big Tick
for Merseytravel
MERSEYTRAVEL has received
reaccreditation of its Big Tick Award for 2013, recognising the
organisation's continual development and commitment to work
inspiration, by the responsible business practices which it
operates.
BITC's Responsible Business Awards are the UK's longest-running and
most respected corporate responsibility awards, set up to champion
the best examples of businesses transforming communities and
transforming their business to create a more sustainable future,
from across all sectors in the UK
Upon receiving the reaccreditation, Councillor Liam Robinson, Chair
of Merseytravel said:- "We believe that developing work
experience into work inspiration improves the competitiveness of our
organisation, the transport sector and the Liverpool City Region.
As some of Merseytravel's workforce near retirement, ensuring the
key skills and knowledge of the industry are passed on to potential
future employees is critical to the sustainability of the
organisation and it is gratifying to be recognised for our work."
Part of Merseytravel's work inspiration programme also develops the
company's existing talent by improving and enhancing employee skills
and abilities as managers. Through the programme a partnership has
developed with Virgin Trains, with whom Merseytravel now share best
practice in relation to learning and development.
EU rules bring
down mobile roaming charges
LOCAL EU MP Brian Simpson
has welcomed EU rules that since Monday, 1 July 2013, all users of
mobile phones, when travelling abroad, will see the reduction how
much their bills.
Brian Simpson said:- "Many of my constituents have been caught
out when using their phones in other European countries, returning
home to find massive bills waiting for them.
Labour MEPs have long supported caps on roaming charges, and since
2007 the EU has achieved price reductions of over 80% across calls,
texts and data.
It is fantastic that from today you'll be making even bigger savings
when you use your phone in other EU countries."
The new EU rules will cap prices (excluding VAT) at 45 cents per
megabyte for data downloading or internet use; 24 cents per minute
to make calls; 7 cents a minute to receive calls; and 8 cents to
send a text.
Mr Simpson said:- "This is fantastic news for people in the UK
who travel to other EU countries, whether for work or for holiday.
As Britain is part of the EU we are able to benefit from these
savings, and we can all look forward to further reductions in July
2014.
This cap is a critical step to getting roaming premiums removed once
and for all, to make sure that staying connected abroad is
affordable for all EU citizens." |

ARRIVA NORTH
WEST SCOOPS TOP ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD
ARRIVA North West has been
commended for its commitment to improving environmental standards in
passenger transport by the Chartered Institute of Transport and
Logistics North West at its annual awards for Education and
Excellence.
Held in association with Peel Ports Group and CAST UK, the awards,
now in their 5th year, celebrate educational and commercial
excellence in freight and passenger transport across the North West
region.
Arriva North West clinched the prize for Environmental Improvement
in Passenger Transport having displayed outstanding results in
reducing its carbon emissions and improving sustainability across
its operations.
John Rimmer, Area Managing Director for Arriva North West,
commented:- "As one of the largest bus companies in the North
West, we are committed to leading the way when it comes to using
technology to provide solid benefits to our customers and the
environment. This year has been significant for us in terms of
delivering on this commitment as we have been able to invest heavily
in bolstering our fleet with a number of cleaner energy gas buses
and hybrid vehicles, which offer us the ideal solution to the
environmental challenges we face as a transport provider in the 21st
century. To be recognised for this work alongside our peers and
contemporaries in the North West is a great testament to the
successes we have enjoyed since launching our new vehicles, and we
are extremely honoured to have been presented with this award."
The carbon neutral gas buses, which are powered by gas produced by
household waste, and the new Volvo hybrid buses all form part of a
group wide campaign by Arriva to introduce more than £26.7m of new
low carbon emission buses to its UK fleet. Arriva is funding £22.2m
of the investment with the remainder provided by the Green Bus Fund.

MAN PRESENTS HIMSELF AT HOSPITAL
WITH FIREARM INJURIES
MERSEYSIDE Police are now
investigating into why a 24 year old man presented himself at a
Liverpool hospital, on Tuesday, 2 July 2013, with firearm injuries.
Officers from the force were called the hospital just after 8pm to a
report a man had presented himself at to staff with injuries to his
abdomen and arm consistent with a firearms discharge. According to
the Police his injuries where not life threatening at this time and
he remains in a stable condition in hospital. Prior to this at about
7.50pm a report was received of shots being fired on Poulsom Drive,
Netherton, and a short time later a white Renault Laguna was found
abandoned on Ford View in Bootle. Both scenes have been examined and
house to house enquiries have been underway. CCTV footage is being
sought by the Police as well. Detectives are in the process of
investigating to see if all 3 incidents are linked. An investigation
into the full circumstances of these incidents is underway. Anyone
