New drive on
road safety at Liverpool primary school
PUPILS at a Liverpool
primary school are to highlight the issue of selfish drivers on
Thursday, 26 September 2013. The children at Childwall Church of
England Primary School are holding a Festival of Safety to raise
awareness of the problems that thoughtless parking and speeding
motorists cause.
Recently the youngsters have
worked with Merseyside Police to design posters which went on
display at the local Tesco Supermarket. They have also teamed up
with the Council's Highways Department to use speed cameras to catch
speeding drivers and challenge them as to why they were driving so
fast.
On 26 September 2013, as part of
the school's ongoing Festival of Safety, they are holding a parking
and road safety awareness day for the whole school community
including children, teachers, parents, carers, grandparents and
governors.
They will be joined by Merseyside
Police Officers and Merseyside Fire Service staff and local MP
Luciana Berger, at the end of the school day to hand out information
and posters to parents as they collect their children to remind them
how important it is to drive and park safely around school.
Headteacher Diane Shaw said:- "We are passionate about
teaching our children the importance of good road sense, and
encouraging them to raise awareness of the issues cars can cause
around school. We have found that getting the children to act as
ambassadors really does encourage drivers to think of the
consequences of their actions, which can lead to a change in
behaviour."
Other events planned for later this term include pupils taking part
in a 'Walking Bus' to and from school, parking surveys
and observations and a talk from a top Alder Hey consultant National
Road Safety Week in November.
