Formby
remembered The Fallen
Report by Major C Trollope.
IN the November cold, with
rain, on 11 November 2013, the Formby Branch of the Royal British
Legion, Paraded at the village Cenotaph at the round-a-bout opposite
the Lloyds and Barclays Banks. The friendly and efficient Police
presence was gratefully appreciated by those attending the Parade at
the Cenotaph Service. The pavement between the road and the path
leading up to the Memorials were crowded by young and old alike;
ex-service and serving members, plus some ATC Cadets and, a
contingent of Range High pupils with their Head Teacher as well as
local people of all ages, the Mayor, and, of course, members of
Formby RBL. Considering the inclement weather, the annual attendance
at this Cenotaph was way beyond expectation. When the Last Post was
sounded, the traffic stopped, and the only sound to be heard was the
very faint distant rumble of traffic on the bye-pass. When the
service ended we were all reminded that there was another Service in
the rear Church Yard of Our Lady's Church.
Many people walked round to the Polish War Graves. These graves are
of Polish airmen who were Spitfire Pilots with the RAF stationed at
an aerodrome close to Burscough. Those intrepid Heroes of the air
were killed fighting with us and for the liberty of their country.
Each year, on Remembrance Day, the people of Formby, and from other
places, offer their prayers and thanks for the sacrifice they made
in the cause for freedom. A proper Remembrance Service with a bugle
playing the Last and Reveille and 4 Banners carried by ACF Cadets
and some members of the Woodvale RAF Aerodrome. This year, despite
the rain, the attendance was very good by the local people and some
visitors. May this recognition of the Polish Air Force continue in
the years to come?
