2013

LIVERPOOL'S Service of
Remembrance and Dedication was held at the Cenotaph at St George's
Hall, in Lime Street, on the Plateau on Sunday, 10 November 2013. A
special mention was made to its being the 70 Commemorative Year of
the Battle of the Atlantic although the usual dignified format was
followed. From 10.40am the Band of the Duke of Lancashire's Regiment
played and Louise Thomas sang prior to the commencement of the
Service. The Act of Remembrance and The Kohima Message were said by
The County President of The Royal British Legion, Sir Alan
Waterworth KCVO., KStJ., JP., DL. The firing of a gun signified the
commencement of the 2 minute Silence. There were thousands of
attendees and yet the silence was total save for the rather
evocative mewling of many seagulls startled by the gun.
Also taking part were representatives of various Christian Churches
and also of the Baha'i (Mr Nigel Devereux), Hindu (Dr Shiv Pande
MBE, JP, DL), Jewish (Rabbi Mordechai Wollenberg), Muslin (Mr Galib
Khan) and Sikh (Mr Hardev Singh Sohal DL) faiths; each of whom read
messages of peace and hope; then they, together simultaneously, gave
the same blessing to the crowd. That was very moving. After the
service and the Wreath laying the Parade wended its way along Lime
Street, Saluting the Cenotaph en route. A biplane made a flypast. It
was a very emotive part of the many calibrations.
