Market on the
move
PLANS are moving forward to
relocate the famous "Greatie" market at Great Homer
Street to a new facility on Dryden Street after Liverpool City
Council submitted a planning application on Friday, 20 December
2013. It is hopped that the new facility will see the popular market
moving a short distance along Great Homer Street to a new site,
which has been designed in partnership with market trader
representatives.
The City Council has been working closely with its partners, St.
Modwen and the operator of the market Groupe Geraud, to determine
the best location, which will see it move from its current position
to make way for the comprehensive regeneration of Great Homer
Street.
The new market represents a significant investment for the City
Council and will include the refurbishment of an existing building
to create a home for the indoor market, a partly covered space for
the outdoor market and parking areas for customers and traders vans
all on one site.
Liverpool City Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Councillor
Malcolm Kennedy, said:- "We have listened to the views of the
market traders and customers and this planning application responds
to their needs and demonstrates our commitment to delivering this
vital scheme. The new market at Dryden Street will complement the
development at Great Homer Street and will provide a first class
facility that will enable it to thrive."
Paul Batho, projects director at St. Modwen, said:- "We have
been working closely with our partners for some time to determine
the best way forward for Great Homer Street Market. Following
lengthy discussions with the market traders and customers we are
delighted that we have been able to reach an agreement on its new
home. We are pleased that Project Jennifer is moving forwards into
its implementation phase and we are looking forward to delivering
the much needed scheme for north Liverpool."
The Project Jennifer scheme, which is being led by regeneration
specialist St. Modwen in partnership with Liverpool City Council,
will transform the Great Homer Street area in north Liverpool. It
will create an estimated 1,000 new jobs, new homes, significant
public realm improvements and includes a new flagship Sainsbury's
supermarket, which will be the largest supermarket in the City.
Work is expected to start on site in Spring 2014.
