Merseyside's
Boys in Blue Bring Christmas To Alder Hey
Photographs by Nick Lakenam
- Merseyside Police Media Department.
HUNDREDS of presents had
been donated this year by Merseyside Police Officers and staff for
Alder Hey Childrens Hospital, in Liverpool; so on Thursday, 19
December 2013, by the boys in blue headed over to cheering up sick
kids for Christmas! Acting on behalf of the big man in red, the
Officers from the force's Roads Policing Department not only made
the special delivery, but also witnesed the amazing work the
hospital does in treating seriously ill children, including those
injured in traffic collisions. Sergeant Craig O'Brien and his team
also joined by Samantha Ratcliffe, who was voted this year's
'Face of Wirral', when they visit wards.
Sergeant O'Brien, said:- "In
our line of work we see all too often young people people who have
suffered terrible injuries due to being in a road traffic collision.
It is heartbreaking to see but helping children land other people is
what motivates most people in the emergency services and hospitals.
This year, instead of giving each other a present, we decided to put
our money towards a present appeal and widen it out to the whole
force. We have been overwhelmed by the number of donations from
police officers and staff and my team has gladly given up their
spare time to wrap them all. We are really looking forward to
playing at being Father Christmas by taking them to Alder Hey, who
do fantastic work all year round, and helping brighten up someone's
day with a present. A number of local businesses, both big and
small, have contributed to our present appeal and I would like to
thank them as well as everyone within the force, for their
generosity and kindness. If we can make a small difference to
someone at a time of year when most are fortunate to be at hoime
with their families, then it will have made the endless hours of
wrapping well worth it!"
Irene Axon, Alder Hey Children's
Charity said:- "We are delighted to welcome Merseyside Police
and Samantha Ratcliffe to our hospital and bring some Christmas
cheer to our wards. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has
contributed to their present appeal and on behalf of Alder Hey
Children's Charity I would like to say a big thank you to the boys
in blue."

Pantomime Stars
Back Fire Safe at Christmas Campaign
Photographs by Tony
Thomas, from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service
PANTO stars want people in
Merseyside to have a fairytale Christmas and New Year by following
firefighters' advice and staying safe from fire.
The cast of Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs, including Liverpool
model Amanda Harrington, who are performing at The Epstein Theatre,
have backed Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service's Fire Safe at
Christmas campaign.
Figures show that accidental house fires increase in December, with
traditions such as cooking Christmas dinner, putting up Christmas
decorations and drinking alcohol posing a greater risk of fire.
There were 46 accidental fires in the home in Liverpool in December
2012. Of those, 37 started in the kitchen and one involved candles.
Across Merseyside there were 117
accidental fires in the home in December 2012 and Merseyside Fire
and Rescue Service is offering safety advice this Christmas as part
of the National Fire Kills campaign.
The panto stars, who also include Benidorm star Crissy Rock and
former Hollyoaks actor Paul Danan, are calling on people to listen
to firefighters' advice to take simple fire safety steps to ensure
they enjoy a safe, fun Christmas.
Amanda, who plays the Fairy in the panto, said:- "A fire in
the home would ruin Christmas. I hope people listen to the fire
safety advice and have a fantastic, safe Christmas this year."
Crissy, who is performing as the Wicked Queen, added:- "It
would be devastating to have a fire and I would say to people to be
careful when enjoying Christmas this year."
As most fires start in the kitchen, people are urged to take care
when cooking and not to leave food cooking on the hob unattended.
People are advised not to cook while under the influence of alcohol.
Christmas decorations and stray wrapping paper can fuel a fire.
Decorations burn easily and should never be attached to lights or
heaters.
Candles should be put out when
leaving the room and should be kept out of the reach of children and
pets. Christmas tree lights should always be switched off when going
to bed. Remember to also check on elderly relatives and
vulnerable neighbours over Christmas as they are at greater risk
from fire.
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service Watch Manager Phil Byrne, said:-
"There are greater risks of fire over Christmas and as the
celebrations get underway people may forget about fire safety.
However simple safety measures can prevent Christmas being ruined by
fire. We advise people to ensure they have a working smoke alarm
fitted on each level of their home and that it is tested every week.
We hope people enjoy the festivities this year and have a very safe
Christmas."
