Crimestoppers challenges people on Merseyside to choose sides

THE independent charity Crimestoppers launches a major campaign to help tackle serious and organised crime on Merseyside.  'Whose Side are you on?' challenges the public to make a choice between who they are going to support, their community or the criminals.

The campaign was launched by Liverpool legend David Fairclough, Everton Giant Peter Reid, Radio City presenter Pete Price, Roy Morris, Chair of Merseyside Crimestoppers, Mark Hallas CEO, Crimestoppers, and the Lord Lieutenant.

The public have the choice of doing nothing or giving the information they have about serious crime affecting their communities anonymously to Crimestoppers.

In 26 years the charity has never revealed the identity of anyone who has given them information.

Over 50,000 homes will receive leaflets, posters will be in public places, high profile activities will take place throughout the City and the Liverpool Echo shall be running a series of features on serious and organised crime and the effect it has on the community.

A DVD has specially been commissioned from LA Productions for the campaign and it will be premiered at the launch and will be available to view on YouTube.

Over the last 5 years over 17,500 people on Merseyside have contacted Crimestoppers; leading to over 1,600 arrests and significant disruption of criminal activity.

Over £6,500,000 worth of drugs has been seized and over £400,000 property recovered.

Roy Morris, Chair of Merseyside Crimestoppers said:- "We are proud to be able to say that Crimestoppers is making a real difference on Merseyside and we hope that this campaign and DVD will really make people contact us with information on crime."

David Fairclough, Liverpool FC Legend said:- "I am delighted to support this campaign and the work that Crimestoppers does on Merseyside. Having grown up in the City and played in many derby matches I know how passionate Liverpudlians are. We are asking them to think about what type of community they want and to make a choice over helping to build up a peaceful community or letting the criminal's damage it. We want them to really choose which side to support".

Peter Reid, Everton Giant said:- "Growing up in Huyton and playing 234 times for Everton I know how strong communities are in Liverpool. I hope that those communities really get behind this campaign and support Crimestoppers."

Pete Price, Radio City, said:- "I support Crimestoppers because it works. They are not the Police, they don't want your name, they can't trace your call, they just want the information, and it is totally anonymous."

Launching the campaign will be David Fairclough Liverpool FC legend, Peter Reid Everton Giant, Mark Hallas, CEO Crimestoppers Trust and Colin McKeown and Pete Price will introduce the DVD.

Crimestoppers operates the 24/7:- 0800 555 111 telephone number for people to pass on information about crimes anonymously. Information can also be passed anonymously through the charity's website.
