SAINSBURY'S AIMS
TO BRING NEW FOODSTORE TO SOUTHPORT
SAINSBURY'S has announced
plans for a new foodstore in Southport, on Meols Cop Retail Park.
Sainsbury's and UBS, the owner of the Retail Park, will be
submitting a joint planning application in the coming months and
actively consulting Southport residents on the plans through a
series of public exhibitions.
UBS is proposing to redevelop the existing Homebase and 2 adjacent
vacant units into a new Sainsbury's foodstore with a sales area of
60,000 sq. ft, creating up to 400 jobs. The plans also include
revised car parking, a petrol filling station as well as improved
pedestrian access and landscaping.
Andrew Sanderson, Regional Development Manager for Sainsbury's,
said:- "The opportunity to redevelop the existing Homebase
building and adjacent units to create a new Sainsbury's foodstore is
an exciting one for Sainsbury's and the local community. This store
will bring more choice to the town while creating up to 400 jobs for
local people. But first, we'd like to know what the community
thinks. We'll be holding a public exhibition to which everyone is
welcome to attend where they will be able to discuss the proposals
with our project team and ask any questions they may have."
The proposed store will be in addition to the existing Sainsbury's
supermarket at Lord Street, which the Company is committed to and
shall remain open, despite the rumours to
the contrary. Southport Homebase will remain open throughout the planning process,
after which Homebase's Formby store on Stephenson Way will become
the company's main outlet in Sefton.
Jonathan Hollick of UBS commented:- "This is a really
interesting project for UBS and we're thrilled to be partnering with
Sainsbury's and helping the brand to expand its offer to the local
community. The proposed foodstore will help to anchor the Retail
Park and ensure it continues to provide an important facility for
the residents of Southport. In the coming weeks we want the
residents of Southport to provide their input into the proposed
development so we can finalise the scheme and submit our planning
application."
John Mayhew of Homebase said:- "We have been in Southport for
11 years and, rest assured, throughout the planning process it
will be business as usual for our customers as they receive the
highest possible standard of service over the coming months. The
current building no longer accords with the requirements of our
business and therefore we cannot continue to operate from the site.
The Company will continue to serve residents of Sefton from our
store in Formby, after the facility at the Meols Cop Retail Park
have been closed." So what are
your views on these plans? Will they affect you? Let us

Forthcoming
event notice:- "Concert at St James"
ON Saturday, 12 April 2014,
at St James Church, Birkdale, Soprano - Angelina Dorlin-Barlow will
be holding a concert at St James with Dave Webster on Piano. The
event starts at 7pm, with free admission. There will be a collection
in aid of Queenscourt Hospice. If you do not know who Angelina, she
is just 13 years old, began her musical studies at the age of 6,
with piano lessons from our organist, Dave Webster. She has enjoyed
great success on the piano with 1st prizes at Liverpool, Crosby and
Blackpool Festivals. She started violin lessons age of 7 and again
has enjoyed great festival success. She is a member of the National
Children's Orchestra and lead the Merchant Taylors' School for Girls
Orchestra on their tour of Belgium in 2013. However, it is as a
singer that Angelina excels. She began singing lessons at the age of
7 and has won many 1st prizes at local festivals, including,
remarkably, the Under 18 solo singing class at Blackpool Festival
last year. In 2013 Angelina was accepted into the Junior Department
of the Royal Northern College of Music, where she studies singing
with Jenny Heslop and piano with Siew Fong Choon. Do not miss the
opportunity to hear the voice of this gifted young lady in a varied
programme which will include Classical and traditional songs, as
well as songs from the Musical Theatre. Our organist, David Webster,
will also be playing organ music by Bach, Messiaen and Gigout. |
