LIVERPOOL
Pride is always held on the
closest weekend to 2 August, in commemoration of the death of 18
year old Michael Causer. This year's "fairy tale"
themed event, was held on Saturday, 2 August 2014, and the
stars, gay, straight, bisexual and transgender, joined up with
people from all forms of life and sexual orientations for what
was the 5th Liverpool Pride. This year's event had Sam Fox, Katy
B, Heather Small, Sonia and Claire Simmo, Kylie A Like, Abba
Gold, local boy band Mic Lowry and the cast of the musical
Wicked, along with many more acts and many more celebrities
taking part or performing at the event. The festival celebrates
LGBT culture and this year was spilt, with 2 stages, 1 at the
City's Gay Quarter and the other at the Pier Head.
The parade
started the day, but sadly, despite the fantastic atmosphere and
colour, not all on the route down were pleased to see it.
However, the rain and the very small minority did not dampen
spirits. Later in the day a memorial was held for Michael and a
very moving speech was given, followed by a very rousing message
from Pete Price, who is a presenter on City Talk 105.9 and Radio
City 96.7, who ended with the words:- "No matter what your
religion, gender and sexual orientation, we must never allow
things like that to happen again!" You can see our video
coverage of the speech given by one of his family members, along
with some highlights of the Parade in
Part 1 of our photographic
highlights. If you don't know who Michael was, he was a gay
teenager hairdresser, who was 'beaten to death' in
homophobic attack, on 25 July 2008, after a small house party. A
memorial fund was established, soon after, initially to support
Michael's family with funeral expenses. Due to the generosity of
the response to this fund, it developed into the Michael Causer
Foundation and became a UK registered charity in July 2011. Each
year the event raises cash for the charity that provides
supported accommodation for vulnerable LGBT young people in the
North West of England. Did you attend the event and brave the
rain? Please do let us know your thoughts and views about the
day and also the weekend long festivities that were held in the
run up to it, by emailing us to:-
