Swap an armchair
for a donor chair this October 2014
AS the first signs of
autumn appear, many people swap outdoor picnics and day, trips for
meals at home and indoor gatherings. NHS Blood and Transplant is
urging people in Merseyside to get out in the cooler weather and get
cosy at a local blood donor session.
Although overall blood use within the NHS has reduced thanks to
improvements in clinical and surgical practices, hospitals and patients still rely on more than 7,000 people attending a donation
session every day, across England and Nor Wales.
It is important that vital blood stocks are maintained at all times,
as red blood cells have a shelf life of just 35 days and platelets a
shelf life of only 7 days. NHS Blood and Transplant needs to
collect blood of each blood group in the right quantities to meet
patient needs and regular donors are crucial in enabling us to do
so. Barbara Blanche, Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHS Blood and
Transplant, said:- "We are asking blood donors in Merseyside
to make an appointment to donate blood to keep stocks healthy
throughout the autumn months. The whole process of donating only
takes an hour or so and you will be helping to ensure that patients
get the blood they need. Whether you've donated before or are
thinking about donating for the 1st time, please book an appointment
to give blood and save lives. You never know whose life you could
save." Blood is required to treat patients for a whole range of reasons. It
is used in accidents and emergency situations, during surgery and in
maternity and neonatal care when either mum or baby need blood. It
is also used as a treatment for cancer and for blood disorders, such
as sickle cell anaemia.
You can register as a donor, find out whether we've got a session
coming up in your area and book an appointment to donate whenever
and wherever you are through
blood.co.uk or by using our
app on your Android, Windows or Apple device. To download an app for
your device, search 'NHSGiveBlood' in the app store.

Clampdown targets construction
industry's poor heal record
'HEALTH as well as safety' will be the
message as poor standards and unsafe work on the North West's
building sites are targeted as part of a nationwide drive aimed at
reducing ill health, death and injury in the industry.
From 22 September 2014, HSE Inspectors will ensure high - risk
activities, particularly those affecting the heal of workers, are
being properly managed. These include working with harmful dusts
such as silica and asbestos, and other hazardous substances.
During the month long initiative, the Heal and Safety Executive (HSE)
will carry out unannounced visits to sites where refurbishment
projects or repair work is underway.
If unacceptable standards are found, inspectors will take immediate
enforcement action, including halting when necessary any
potentially dangerous activities.
HSE is urging the industry to 'think health' as an estimated
9,000 people working in construction in the Nor West last year
were suffering from ill heal caused by their work.
Figures also show 7 construction workers in the region were
killed and 323 suffered a major injury while at work in 2012/13.
Dorothy Shaw, HSE Principal Inspector for Construction in the Nor
West, said:- "The industry has made much progress in reducing
the number of people killed and injured in its activities but, for
every fatal accident, approximately 100 construction workers die
from a work related cancer.
A shorter inspection initiative focusing on heal risks for
construction workers in June saw enforcement action taken at 1 in 6
of hundreds of sites visited.
Time and again we find smaller contractors working on refurbishment
and repair work failing to protect their workers through a lack of
awareness and poor control of risks.
This isn't acceptable; it costs lives, and we will take strong and
robust action where we find poor practice and risky behaviour.
Through campaigns like this we aim to ensure contractors take all
risks to their workers seriously, and not just focus on immediate
safety implications. They need to put in place practical measures to
keep workers both safe and well."
Further information about the initiative and safe working in
construction can be found
online.
