Barbershop quartet pays harmonious tribute to Frank Sinatra
A student from
The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts is paying tribute to
'Ol' Blue Eyes' on a BBC1 special, to be screened in the
New Year (2015). 20 year old Phil Glenny sings as part of barbershop
quartet Proper Sound who are competing against other musical acts
in:- 'Frank Sinatra - Our Way'. The one off primetime
programme features singers from different styles and genres offering
their take on Frank Sinatra classics and is due to be broadcast on
Saturday, 3 January 2015.
Phil, who is in his 3rd year studying BA (Hons) Theatre and
Performance Technology, performs a barbershop rendition of Come Fly
with Me along with fellow singers:- Luke Freeney, Danny Gortler and
Joe O'Leary. Being selected for the programme follows a successful
few months for Liverpool based Proper Sound, who formed in March
2014. In November they were named the winners of the national BABS
(British Association of Barbershop Singers) Youth Quartet Contest.
The group perform a broad repertoire, from:- 'The Beach Boys';
to 'Bruno Mars', as well as 'Frank Sinatra'.
'Frank Sinatra - Our Way' is presented by
Alexander Armstrong and Rochelle Humes, with the winners decided by
a panel of experts including singer Mica Paris, comedian Rufus Hound
and Eurythmics star Dave Stewart. The programme marks Sinatra's
centenary, with the acts battling it out for the chance to perform
at a concert celebrating the legendary singer later in 2015.
Speaking about appearing on the programme, Phil said:- "It was
a brilliant experience to be part of this show celebrating the
legacy of Sinatra and seeing how people can still interpret his
music in so many different ways. We're always looking to bring our
music, and barbershop in general, to as wide an audience as possible
so hopefully viewers will be excited by what we do. We're all
looking forward to watching it at home with our families; it'll be a
great way to start 2015."
Appearing on the programme may also help Phil's future in another
way. He added:- "When I graduate from LIPA this summer, I'm
interested in pursuing a career as a technician working in
television. Being able to watch how a show like this is put
together, particularly the technical aspects, has been invaluable."
Viewers can see Proper Sound on 'Frank Sinatra - Our Way',
on BBC One, Saturday, 3 January 2015, at 7pm. For more information
