Southport's Tourism Office
Gin Palace Take Over
ONCE the place to go to find out where
to go, Southport's iconic Lord Street tourist information office is to reopen as
a stylish Cafe serving specialist coffees, fine malt whiskeys and artisan gins.
The beautiful mock-Victorian building will now be a destination in its own right
with plans to attract the smart and cultured Southport crowd seeking a
sophisticated experience from their night out.
The idea for Remedy is that of 2 locals, Sarah Simcock and Susannah Porter,
who'd dreamed of creating a a place where they would feel at home having a
morning coffee, or evening drinks, in a relaxed and friendly environment.
Susannah, a former deputy principal of a large college and Sarah, a former high
risk safety consultant, have been working on their idea to turn it into reality
for the past 8 years. Researching their products was the fun part, as they have
tried and tested more than 50 artisan gins and hundreds of fine malts in their
bid to create the ultimate perfectionist's paradise. "Any coffee,
gin or whisky expert should appreciate the level of research we have gone into
in order to curate the ultimate experience. The work and effort that goes
into the process of producing these beautiful drinks has to be reflected in the
way we sell it. Our staff are hand picked and highly trained, the creation of
'Team Remedy' has been very important to us." says
Susannah.
Remedy opens at the beginning of July 2015.

'To let' board ban
comes into force
A pilot scheme to ban 'to let'
boards
in a part of Liverpool comes into force on Monday, 22 June 2015. It follows concerns
raised by residents and local ward Councillors living in Greenbank ward about
the number of boards, due to the fact the area has a large student population
and a significant proportion of privately rented accommodation. They believe the
boards are having a detrimental impact on the sustainability of the housing
market in the area.
The City Council has written to estate agents and landlords asking them to
remove the boards. If necessary, the Council does have the power to apply to the
Secretary of State for permission to prohibit the use of boards.
Councillor Frank Hont, Cabinet member for housing, said:- "Local residents
are concerned about the impact that the boards are having on the area. We have
been happy to listen and work with them to take action to introduce a pilot
scheme which we hope will address the issue. So far we have had a broadly
positive and constructive response from agents and landlords."
Kris Cargill from the Dales Residents Association added:- "Some of the
roads in our area have dozens of boards stretching for as far as the eye can
see, and they often remain up long after a property has been let. We have a lot
of complaints from residents because they give the impression that the area is a
place where nobody wants to live, when in actual fact is that we are a strong
community. We hope this scheme will remove these eyesores and make our area more
attractive."
Greenbank Councillor, Laura Robertson-Collins, who took a motion to Council
calling for the introduction of the ban, said:- "I am really pleased that
we are able to take action to tackle the concerns of local residents by
introducing this pilot scheme."
The area covered by the new zone is bounded by Gainsborough Avenue (evens side
only), Smithdown Road and the railway line and includes:-
