'behind the scenes' in Port Sunlight for Heritage
Open Days 2015
FOLLOWING the success of the 'Open Village' in 2014, Port
Sunlight Museum and Garden Village will host its 2nd event on Sunday, 13
September 2015, in partnership with village residents and attractions.
'Open Village' marks the final event in Port Sunlight's Heritage Open
Days programme for 2015, which will run from Monday, 7 September 2015 and
includes free entry to Bridge Cottage; once home to village founder William
Hesketh Lever; and the opportunity to watch a metals conservator cleaning and
waxing the bronzes on Port Sunlight's Grade I Listed War Memorial.
Open Village is also linked to Port Sunlight's annual Founder's Day celebrations
and gives visitors the unique opportunity to go behind the scenes in Port
Sunlight for a day to find out what it's really like to live, work and play in
this historic village.
Nigel Chapman Rogers, events coordinator for Port Sunlight Museum and Garden
Village said:- "We are really excited to be staging 'Open Village' for the
second year running and are very grateful to the Port Sunlight community for
their support, without which we could not stage this event. We have tried to
retain some of the most popular elements of the 2014 event; the Tame Valley
Vintage and Classic Car Club will have a static display on the Museum Green, and
the Port Sunlight Ladies Bowling Team will compete in their annual club
tournament. However, there will be some new features for 2015 including the
chance to see inside the original entrance to the Lever Brothers offices, and
local and village artists exhibiting and selling their work in a 'Handmade Fair'
at the Lyceum."
Visitors will also be able to access previously unseen houses, rear gardens, and
allotment plots. There will be a special exhibition at Bridge Cottage exploring
the history of one of Port Sunlight's largest cottages and its occupants, and
special tours led by a costumed character.
On the day visitors should head to Port Sunlight Museum to pick up an
'Open Village' trail which will identify which houses, gardens and
public buildings are participating in the event. The event will run from 11am to
4pm and is free to enter. Free walking tours of the village will also be running
from Port Sunlight Museum, at 11am, 1pm and 3pm.
