Liverpool woman to run
support group for individuals or families affected by severe allergies
LAURA Scott, from Liverpool, has
started a support group to help others affected by severe allergies, or 'anaphylaxis'.
Food allergies are thought to affect around 5% to 8% of children and 2% to 4% of
adults.
NHS hospital in England dealt with over 20,000 admissions for
allergies in the 12 months between February 2013 and February 20141 and
every year around 20 people will die from anaphylaxis.
Laura's support group is run in conjunction with the Anaphylaxis Campaign,
the only UK wide charity to support people with severe, life threatening
allergies.
Laura said:- "I helped start the group because living with severe
allergies, whether allergic yourself or as a carer for someone else with
anaphylaxis, can be really difficult and have a profound impact on your
daily life. It can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety – particularly
if it's a child with anaphylaxis you're caring for. In the beginning, you
worry that anything they eat could threaten their life. Helping others is,
for me, a great way to regain some of the control you feel you've lost and
provide some tangible support to those who are finding it hard to cope."
Anaphylaxis Campaign CEO, Lynne Regent said:- "It's brilliant that
Laura has decided to run a support group for us in Liverpool. Many people in
the general population do not understand just how serious allergy and
anaphylaxis can be. Our support groups, like the one Laura is running,
provide a vital touch point for affected families and individuals and are a
really positive way for them to support each other. "
The next group meeting will be on 22 October 2015.

children 'meet the milkmen' for community hero launch
A localish school, in Ormskirk has
launched a community initiative to celebrate local heroes.
Mortons Dairies, the Merseyside based dairy, kicked off the community
initiative at Halsall St Cuthbert's C of E Primary School in Ormskirk.
Milkmen from the family owned dairy arrived at the school on a traditional
milk float to educate children about the milk coming from cows, its health
benefits and also to share samples of dairy products with the children.
Mortons Dairies has been delivering milk and groceries to neighbourhoods in
Ormskirk since the 1920's.
Julian Harrison, operations director of
Mortons Dairies, said:- "We're delighted to launch this great
community initiative at St Cuthbert's. Our milkmen are usually out on the
road in the early hours and many children have never seen a real milk float
in action before. We're proud to be in local classrooms showing them what
we've been doing in their local community for many years."
Miss Leggett, teacher at Halsall St Cuthbert's, added:-
"It was
exciting for our children to meet the milkmen from Mortons Dairies and it
was a great start to our ongoing community hero initiative which also
includes the local police, fire brigade, dentists and doctors."

New Royal programme grants
£34,500 early Christmas present to 33 local groups
WITH less than 100 days until
Christmas, 33 local community organisations have been given an early Christmas
present from the new Royal Sustainable Communities programme.
These 33 organisations are the winning submissions to the Liverpool Community
Fund, set up by Carillion and the Trust as part of the deal for the new Royal.
The fund will provide £100,000 over three years to local organisations that
support; healthy living, building stronger communities, cleaner, safer, greener
communities and education.
Among the successful bids this year, were the Netherley Valley Youth Angling
Project. The group use angling trips to work with socially excluded young people
in Netherley and Belle Vale to encourage healthy lifestyles and improve
self esteem. Tom Marshall from the project said:- "We
work in a deprived and isolated area supporting kids though activities to
broaden their horizons, experience new things and give them a fresh outlook to
help promote healthier lifestyles.
This funding will support 10 fishing trips for 50 young people aged from 9 to
22. Without funding like this we simply couldn't operate and I'd like to thank
Carillion and the Trust."
This is the 2nd year that funding from the new Royal Sustainable Communities
programme has supported local community groups, with 19 groups being supported
in 2014.
Another winner from this year is Greenbank Sports Academy near Sefton Park. Run
by and for disabled people, the academy supports disabled people and other
disadvantaged groups to fulfil their potential by providing education, training,
employment, sport and recreational services. Their funding would provide fully
inclusive and personalised training sessions for those isolated by their
disability.
Steve Hoskins from the academy said:-
"With this money we can now offer circuit training for people with a physical or
learning disability twice a week. I'd like to say thank you as this will help
encourage and enable people with a disability to lead more active lives and give
them an opportunity to feel less isolated."
To mark the awarding of the funding, Carillion and the Trust hosted a
celebration event, on the 22 September 2015, at The Education Centre at the Royal with
representatives from 16 of the organisations receiving a share of the £34,500.
Speaking at the event, Simon Webb, Carillion's managing director for the new
Royal said:- "The new Royal project isn't just about building a state of
the art hospital with the latest healthcare facilities. It is about working with
the local community to establish a lasting legacy that builds better lives for
generations to come."
Ian Stenton, head of sustainability at the Royal said:- "Supporting the
local community is an instrumental part of the new Royal project. Together with
Carillion and Liverpool Community Volunteer Service we are supporting some
inspirational organisations that are helping to improve the health and
opportunities for local people."
