Voting opens to find
Merseyside's young X-Factor artists, so please vote today!
MORE than 900 pupils entered this year's
Dot Art Schools competition and are hoping for your votes to see their artwork
on display in a free public exhibition at St George's Hall later this spring.
Almost 1,000 pieces of art from 53 primary and secondary schools across
Merseyside were entered in to this year's competition, making it the largest to
date.
The online inter school art contest, which is now in its 4th year, gives both
Years 6 and 9 pupils across the Liverpool City region the opportunity to
showcase their artistic talents and have their work displayed in the exhibition.
The judges have narrowed it down to their top 3 entries from each school ready
for the public vote. The artwork with the most votes from each participating
school will form part of the 2 week exhibition, which opens in May 2016.
The shortlisting panel includes
representatives from some of Merseyside's best-known arts and cultural
institutions, including Polly Brannan from Liverpool Biennial, Sandra Penketh
from National Museums Liverpool and Metal Liverpool's Jenny Porter.
Polly Brannan, education curator at Liverpool Biennial, said:- "It is a
privilege to be part of the shortlisting panel for Dot- Art Schools this year.
The standard of work is outstanding and that made my job extremely difficult. I
am so encouraged by the number of talented young artists we have in Liverpool."
Dot-Art Schools project manager Carolyn Murray added:- "The competition is
designed to celebrate the creative and artistic talents of young people in
Merseyside to nurture and develop the next generation of rising stars.
It is a fantastic chance for pupils to showcase their skills and artwork to
their parents, family and the wider community in a free public exhibition in one
of Britain's most iconic buildings."
Last year more than 3,000 votes were cast with
pupils from Rainhill High School, West Kirby Residential School, Cardinal Heenan
Catholic School, St Patrick's Primary School, Gwladys Street Community Primary
School and Springwood Heath Primary awarded prizes.
Posters with images of the top 3 entries from each school will displayed at
selected Merseyrail train stations nearest to the schools to encourage people to
vote for their favourite.
The overall winners will be chosen at a prize giving ceremony by special guest
judge Susan M Coles, a former president of the National Society for Education in
Art and Design (NSEAD).
Following the exhibition at St George's Hall, artworks will also be displayed at
1 of Merseyrail's City Centre Train Stations.

Football fans promote the
gift of life
ACROSS the UK there are around 10,000 people
who need a transplant. 3 people a day die due to lack of donors. Southport
and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust has teamed up with the Sandgrounders to raise
awareness of the issue.
Hundreds of information packs will be given to supporters at the National League
match, between Southport and Lincoln City, on 16 April 2016.
Andrew Kent, clinical lead for organ donation at the Trust, said:- "People
often talk about what music they'd like played at their funeral yet rarely talk
about organ donation. It's crucial we start to talk about this subject because
it can help save lives.
We want people to sign up to become donors and we also want existing donors to
make sure their families know of their wishes if they die. Transplants can save
or greatly enhance the lives of other people. But this relies on donors and
their families agreeing to donate their organ or tissue."
A spokesperson for Southport FC said:- "Southport Football Club are
delighted to be part of the initiative to raise awareness of organ and tissue
donation. This is something which can impact on any one of us at any time.
We will launch our awareness campaign at our next home Vanarama National League
fixture versus Lincoln Town at the Merseyrail Community Stadium, on Saturday, 16
April 2016.
To play a part in saving lives in the future by publicising how we can carry
donor cards and engaging with our families and friends is an honour for the
club. We can all contribute to potentially helping others."
To join the NHS Organ Donor Register, you can do so via going online at:-
OrganDonation.NHS.UK/SignForLife or by calling:- 0300 123 23 23.
Let your friends and family know when you have signed the Organ Donor Register
and join the conversation online by using the campaign hash tag #signforlife.
This summer sees the British Transplant Games take place in Liverpool. The Games
aim to demonstrate the benefits of transplantation, encouraging transplant
patients to regain fitness, whilst increasing public awareness of the need for
more people to join the Organ Donation Register.

Boosting Region's Economy By £8m
NORTH West music promoters Cuffe and
Taylor will boost the region's economy by almost £8m in 2016. The music and
event promoters will host 22 nights of live music across the North West this
year with a mix of headline concerts and festivals. And with 177,000 tickets for
sale across the events it is estimated that the boost to the tourism economy
will be a staggering £7.9m

Cuffe and Taylor director Peter Taylor said he hoped the figures would provide a
welcome boost to the North West economy. "We have an eclectic mix of
events arranged across the North West this year which will not only provide
audiences with a fantastic night of world class entertainment, but will also see
a boost into each town's economy.
When the figures are broken down in this way it is a great way for each locality
to see just what the value of that event is.
2016 is an incredibly busy year for Cuffe and Taylor as we not only have an
array of outstanding events planned across the North West but the whole of the
UK and we look forward to continuing and expanding these events into 2017 and
beyond."
Cuffe and Taylors events across the North West in 2016 will see the week long
Lytham Festival which includes:- headline concerts from Noel Gallagher's High
Flying Birds and Bryan Adams, Cheshire's 3 day Betley Concerts and 3 day
Tatton Park Concerts by the Lake, Lancashire's 3 day Symphony at the Tower,
two days at Cartmel Racecourse and a number of 1 off nights at Lytham's Lowther Pavilion and Blackpool's Winter Gardens.
As well as Noel Gallagher and Bryan Adams, Cuffe and Taylor's events this year
also include headline performances from Sir Tom Jones, Will Young, Joe Bonamassa,
Simply Red, Jools Holland, Status Quo and Roxette.
Peter added:- "2016 is without a doubt our biggest year of events to date.
In addition to the fantastic artists we are bringing to the North West region we
are also presenting Rod Stewart's UK stadium tour, a tour of Joan Collins brand
new one woman show, the Aled Jones Cathedral Tour, 12 dates at Scarborough Open
Air Theatre, our six-day Greenwich Music Time festival and a night at the London
