Northern Poorhouse with Universal Credit cuts for over 30,000 people
NEARLY 31,000 working people in the
North West stand to lose out as government cuts to Universal Credit work
allowances kick in from Monday warns UNISON.
Cuts to Universal Credit were announced in last July's Budget alongside changes
to Tax Credits. While the chancellor backed down over Tax Credits, the planned
reduction in Universal Credit remains in place.
UNISON calculations, based on the new Universal Credit work allowance rates,
show that low-paid workers in the North West who are single parents, could lose
up to £2,600 per year, while a 2 parent family with children could be worse off
to the tune of £1,000 per year. Couples without children could be down over £800
annually.
UNISON's North West regional secretary Kevan Nelson said:- "The chancellor
may have beaten a retreat on Tax Credits but still wants to cut in work benefits
for the low and middle income workers who have already been moved onto the new
Universal Credit benefit. Universal Credit is meant to help meet the essential needs of families on low
incomes who pay every penny of their taxes. It helps them pay the rent and put
food on the table, it's not spare cash they are able to salt away in shady Tax havens as others are able to do.
Today there will be 31,000 people on Universal Credit losing out in the North
West, that's 2 in every 5 of those people to suffer cuts across the
country.
As Universal Credit is rolled out more people will suffer cuts to their already
low incomes. The chancellor is in danger of creating a northern poorhouse,
rather than a northern powerhouse." |

High 5 for City as drama
hits small screen
A gripping original drama filmed in
Liverpool will be hitting Sky 1, on Friday, 15 April 2016, at 9pm. The Five has been created
by international bestselling author Harlan Coben and is a compelling crime
thriller which follows the story of a group of friends haunted by the
disappearance, some years earlier, of the younger brother of 1 of the group
while he was in their care.
Starring Tom Cullen (Downton Abbey), O-T Fagbenle (Looking), Lee Ingleby
(Inspector George Gently) and Sarah Solemani (Bad Education) cast and crew,
which over the course of the filming was in excess of 100 people, spent more
than seven months in the City bringing an estimated economic impact of £2million
to the local economy.
A variety of City Centre locations, which will become a fictitious City in the
programme, were used for the 10 part drama including inside the Cunard
Building, and filming also took place in the former Holly Lodge School site, in
West Derby.
The Five has been produced by RED Production Company which is behind critically
acclaimed and multi BAFTA award winning productions including:- Sally Wainwright's
Happy Valley and Last Tango in Halifax.
Liverpool's Film Office Manager, Lynn Saunders, said:- "It was a huge coup
for the City to be selected as the main filming location for what is set to be
1 of Sky One's flagship dramas.
We had fantastic feedback from the production team regarding their Liverpool
experience, with the choice of locations and the fact there was a dedicated Film
Office on hand to help them out when needed really standing out for them.It has
been a great boost to our local economy and we look forward to seeing the
finished product on our screens in the next couple of weeks."
Nicola Shindler, executive producer and founder of RED Production Company,
said:- "Liverpool and its' surrounding area provided the perfect backdrop
to The Five.
We needed a location that would give us a fictitious town and a diverse range of
locations; from luxurious suburban homes to dark urban landscapes. The City
became an important part of the tone and feel of the show and, logistically, was
a great place to shoot."
Filming in Liverpool in 2015 was up 20% compared to 2014, with 230
productions being filmed in the City which resulted in a massive 998 film days
in the City. This brought in more than £11.5million to the local economy.
As well as The Five, projects included feature films Florence Foster Jenkins
starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant and Harry Potter spin off Fantastic Beasts
and Where to Find Them. A Stephen Poliakoff drama Close to the Enemy and ITV's
supernatural crime drama Houdini and Doyle were also filmed in Liverpool, in
2016. |
