Formby and Freshfield
remember the fallen at Battle of the Somme Photographs by Patrick Trollope
ON Sunday, 3 July 2016, Formby Village marked the Battle
of the Somme with a commemorative service held at the Village War Memorial,
where the names of those killed in action at that battle and throughout World
War 1, from Formby and Freshfield can be located. We have uploaded the video
below to our YouTube channel of the commemoration event. This was 1 of the worst
losses of young men from across Merseyside and the UK, throughout that war. Also
on show were some of the World War 1 medals, (colloquially known as Pip, Squeak
and Wilfred) which had been given to Captain Frank Trollope. He was 1 of the
lucky ones who lived, but lost a lung after being gassed in the trenches during
that campaign:-
