Alternative Fashion Festival 1st Birthday Show 2016
ON 29 June 2016, Circo, in the Albert Dock, hosted
the 1st Birthday Alternative Fashion Festival. This event is not like many
fashion shows as it aims to changing people's views of those who are different.
The show is not anti fashion industry, far from it, as the shows Founder and
Creative Director, Jane Bellis, is in fact well known within the industry,
working on events from local wedding and bridal shows to international events,
like the New York Fashion Week, in the US! This event is operating on a very
small budget, but it is getting bigger and bigger as it gets more established,
via a host of satellite that took place through out last year and more to take
place this year. The aim is to include people who are often left out, like those
who are disabled, along with other areas of the community, from Goths to
Cosplayers. The idea is to combat the mainstream media's image of the fashion
industry, which is constantly reinforcing messages that if you do not conform to
stereotyped versions of beauty, that social will reject you. This institutional
mindset undermines creativity and self worth, thus in the eyes of those taking
part in this event, it has a negative impact on society and also the fashion
industry. One of the models said:- "I'm always being told I'm to fat for
modelling, but in reality how many people really conform to an 'ideal' body
image." Another model added that:- "I keep being told by people that I'm to
skinny." Both added that it is hard for both males as well as females to avoid
negative messages that the main stream media gives out. Another model said:- "I
find that individuals give in to less important reasons to conform to what is
normal dress or looks. What I think should be celebrated is people who don't
conform. They are the ones who create the fashion and drive the industry. We
need to stop the negative reinforcing of stereotypes and embrace that we are all
different. Would the World not be a happier and safer place if we did that?"
This event was in our view an extremely interesting and very positive event. It
makes people think and also has some extremely good clothing, acting, singing as
well as poetry, making it a show anyone interested in fashion should attended.
our Editor Patrick Trollope said:- "It was a privilege to have attended
this event and to have helped out at it." This comment was echoed by the
gorgeous
Suzy, from LatexFashion.TV
who attended and filmed at the Alternative Fashion Fest in Liverpool. If you
