Workers in the North West
put in ₤2.9 billion worth of unpaid overtime a year
WORKERS in the North West gave their
employers ₤2.9 billion of free labour last year by doing unpaid overtime,
according to new analysis of official statistics published by the TUC.
538,521 people in the North West, put in an average of 7.3 hours a week in unpaid
overtime during 2016. This is worth ₤5,519 a year on the average wage.
This week the TUC held it's 13th Annual Work Your Proper Hours Day. Prior to this day,
the average person doing unpaid overtime has effectively worked the year so far
for free.
To mark the day, the TUC is asking workers to take a proper lunch break and
leave on time. Managers should consider how to stop relying on their staff's
unpaid overtime.
The TUC is warning workers that Brexit may threaten their working time
protections. Currently guaranteed by EU law, the rights could be weakened by
future governments following Brexit.
The TUC has designed an
online calculator for workers
to find out how much more they would get paid each year if their unpaid overtime
was paid at their usual rate.
TUC Regional Secretary for the North West Lynn Collins said:- "Few of us
mind putting in some extra time when it's needed. But if it happens all the time
and gets taken for granted, that's a problem. So make a stand today, take your
full lunch break and go home on time.
The best bosses understand that a long hours culture doesn't get good results.
So we're asking managers to set an example by leaving on time too.
Anyone worried about the long hours culture in their workplace should get
together with workmates and join a union. That way you can get your voices heard
and get the support you need to make sure your boss doesn't break the rules.
The government still doesn't have a water tight plan to stop working time
protections getting weaker when we leave the EU. The Prime Minister should
promise to put a guarantee into our future trade deals with Europe that British
workers will have a level playing field with EU workers."
2 men jailed in ₤840k smuggling fraud
2 Investigations by HM Revenue and
Customs (HMRC) have found that a warehouse in Sandbach was used as a
distribution hub by international cigarette smugglers in an ₤840,000 Tax fraud.
HMRC officers observed a suspicious delivery at the Millbuck Way site when a
heavy goods vehicle (HGV) arrived towing a curtain sided trailer and reversed up
to the unit at the Springvale Industrial Estate in July 2016.
The HMRC officers caught Hadayatullah Meahrabi, 20, from Croydon, and Willem
Peele, 56, from Holland, in the middle of unloading more than 3,000,000 smuggled
illegal cigarettes from the HGV.
Further illegal cigarettes were found
intentionally hidden behind boxes of ice cream cones and biscuits within the
unit.
After their arrest at the rented warehouse, the 2 Dutch nationals were remanded
into custody and after pleading guilty to Tax fraud and jailed for a total of 5
years, at Chester Crown Court, on 23 February 2017.
HMRC seized a total of 3,289,160 illegal cigarettes in the unit and trailer
which included:-
► 190,000
counterfeit Lambert and Butler cigarettes.
► 1,200,000 Jims
Filter King cigarettes. (Not sold in
the UK)
► 909,160 Richman
cigarettes.
► 990,000 Gold
Classics cigarettes. (Not sold in the
UK)

North West hosts vital
financial and related professional services hubs
A new report out from 'The City UK'
underlines the important role UK based financial and related professional
services play in underpinning prosperity in the North West.
Of the 2.2 million people working in the industry, the majority (1.5 million, or
around 66%) work outside London, 215,000 of them based in the North West. This
makes the region the second largest financial and related professional services
centre outside of London in terms of employment. In total, the industry
represents around 6.6% of the region's employment, and contributed 7.3% or
(₤11.5bn) of the region's Gross Value Added (GVA) in 2015.
The City UK's report – 'Enabling Growth across the UK' – shows that while
London remains core to the industry's strong position, major centres like the
North West play a key role in maintaining the UK's place as the world's leading
financial centre. Overall, 21 Towns and cities across the country have in excess
of 10,000 people in employment in the industry including Liverpool. Manchester
is 1 of 5 major centres across the country with more than 30,000 people
employed in financial and related professional services.
The region is a particular centre for asset and wealth management, management
consulting and accountancy. It also has expertise in several fast growing areas
such as the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) listings, venture capital
investment, public private partnerships, private wealth management, and maritime
and environmental law.
The North West is also home to the largest legal centre in the UK after London
and has a high proportion of the top 100 law firms outside of London. Employers
in the region have access to a large pool of financial, accountancy, business
management and legal graduates from North West universities, including
Manchester Business School and Lancaster University Management School, as well
as Manchester's College of Law.

The report also highlights where the UK's regions and nations may benefit from
shifting trends in globalisation, particularly in relation to reverse off
shoring.
As cost differentials between the UK and other lower cost overseas centres
narrow, there is an opportunity to retain or 'win' back middle and back
office functions. Digitalisation also presents a great opportunity for the
industry in centres across the country, bringing new high skilled jobs. Such
jobs have already added ₤140 billion in value to the economy in new wages over
the past 15 years.
The City UK identifies 4 key areas for policymakers and other key stakeholders
to focus on, working in close partnership with the industry, to maintain the
UK's international competitiveness:-
► Rollout intra and inter regional partnerships, linking complementary regional
clusters and promoting engagement through partnerships and by unlocking
investment in infrastructure.
► Identifying and supporting emerging and disruptive innovation and growing
specialist industry clusters across the UK in these skills areas.
► Enhancing the UK's education system and ensuring specialist companies have
access to complementary skill sets.
► A stable and predictable business environment,
including the adoption of a clear and consistent approach to devolution, to
ensure the UK remains open for business from across the world. |
