Black History Month

BIG PLANS are on the cards for this year’s celebration of Black History Month – but more ideas are being called for and plans next week for a meeting at Liverpool’s Caribbean Centre so members of the community can join in with their ideas for events.

The events organised by members of the Black History Month group include people from Liverpool City Council, National Museums Liverpool, Novas, Glaxo, Merseyside Youth Association, Granby Residents Association, South Central JET, the theatres and people from the black community.

The group has been meeting regularly, and will hold its next meeting at the Caribbean Centre on Wednesday June 4 from 2pm to 4pm. Anyone who is interested in finding out more about what is going on and how they can get involved is welcome.

The group would also like to hear more ideas for events or activities to go ahead during October.

Executive member for community, equality and values councillor Marilyn Fielding said: “We’re determined that this is going to be a fantastic month, and want people from the black community to come along and really get involved in this.”

Head of equal opportunities for the city council, and representative for the Black History Group Andrew Nembhard added, “We’ve been putting in a lot of hard work since late last year to make sure as many people as possible can celebrate Black History Month – in as many ways as possible.

“There are a lot of exciting events already planned, but we want ideas from other organisations and individuals who might not so far have taken part.”

The public meeting will be at the Caribbean Centre in Amberley Street, L8, on Wednesday June 4 from 2pm to 4pm.
