South Sefton in New York City

A Level students from Hugh Baird College's South Sefton Campus recently left College life behind as they headed for the Big Apple. Students from Drama and Law courses crossed the pond to New York City, in order to take in the sights and also experience 1st hand how their chosen subjects work in practice.

In order to inspire Drama students, the 4 day trip involved an acting workshop with Stephen Tewksbury, the star of the hit Broadway show 'Kinky Boots.'

The students were able to build on their performance skills and improvisation techniques by learning from a professional actor who uses these techniques daily. After the workshop, a Q and A session on working in the industry was hosted for students to ask anything they wanted relating to starting a career within the performing arts industry. Later on in the evening the whole group got to watch Stephen in action as they took their seats for a performance of Kinky Boots.

Law students were also treated to viewing their chosen subject in practice, by visiting Courts, to view real trials. This gave them a chance to explore the American legal system and they were also were able to visit the United Nations to examine issues related to international law.

In addition to these exciting educational experiences, the students soaked up New York culture by visiting popular tourist sites like:- Wall Street, Times Square, Empire State Building and the Brooklyn Bridge.

Drama A Level student, Lauren Comaish said:- "New York was incredible, as a drama student, being able to take part in a workshop hosted by a professional actor was a once in a life time opportunity that I am glad I took. I learnt so much from the Q and A session, it has really helped me to plan my future career goals."

Drama A Level teacher, Paul Fitzpatrick said:- "The trip to New York us typical of the enrichment experiences we offer our A Level learners. Trips and visits like this bring subjects to life, increase engagement and help to broaden our learners' social awareness."

Gulliver's are now recruiting for new trainee managers to undertake their Trainee Management Programme

11 individuals from the 3 previous years' are enjoying careers at Gulliver's in permanent managerial positions across the company, all as a result of the programme and we are now launching the 4th consecutive year of running the course!

During the Trainee Management Programme, participants spend time at all 3 Gulliver's locations, completing a number of work based projects, expected to engage them in every aspect of Gulliver's business. Because of the fast pace of the theme park, the course is just 1 year long, but very intensive.

This year's graduates have completed the training programme, with all 5 of them gaining management roles upon completion.

Jenna Hughes and Chris Cook, existing managers at Gulliver's - 2015 Graduates

Sion Bartlett, graduate of the Trainee Management Programme, said:- "I've absolutely loved my experience during this course. I spent most of my teenage life convinced I wanted to be a teacher. I qualified for this, but when I saw the advertisement for trainee managers here at Gulliver's, it was as though a switch flipped and I knew then that I wanted to entertain children, not just teach them. Through my role at Gulliver's Kingdom I can do both. I am involved in both entertaining and educating children, which is the best of both worlds. I would recommend this programme to anyone with a flair for fun, who would like to do a job that is different every day; no 2 are the same!"

The Trainee Management Programme this year will see 6 successful applicants work in all areas of the business: from catering to costume work; splash Zone to sales; rides to retail. The aim of which is to ensure they get a feel for what will be expected of them upon graduating, and allowing them to truly understand the working - the ins and outs - of the parks.

Dean Kimberley, Director of Guest Services, said:- "The Trainee Management Programme is a truly unique experience. There isn't another course in the country like it and we are very proud to be paving the way in theme park management training programmes. The trainees make us proud year on year and their efforts shine through, which is why they're offered jobs within the company upon completion; those who complete the course, after seeing and being involved with the nitty gritty side of stuff as well, are the people we want joining the Gulliver's family."

Sion Bartlett, who had previously qualified as a teacher and completed his PCGE, but decided he wanted to:- 'entertain kids, not teach them,' is now responsible for The Explorers Retreat, Nerf Zone and Entertainments at Matlock Bath. This role is brand new role created purely as a result of the massively successful accommodation usage that is now being offered at Gulliver's Kingdom.

Lee Pettitt, who had 6 years' experience of working within a theme park business prior to attending the programme, has taken up a Ride Management role at Gulliver's World, Warrington; his history of working with rides previously being an advantage.

Matt Young, previously a team leader at Gulliver's Dinosaur and Farm Park, loved his job so much that he decided he wanted to gain a more permanent role within the company and is also proud to have a Ride Management role at Gulliver's World, Warrington.

Stephen McKenzie, former DJ and music producer, has utilised his experience in the entertainment industry to become an integral part of enhancing the guest experience of the thousands of birthday parties hosted annually at Splash Zone and NERF Zone at Gulliver's World, Warrington.

Claire Ballin, who was previously a holiday REP for numerous locations around the world, is now responsible for Splash Zone and NERF Zone at Gulliver's Land, Milton Keynes. Her role incorporates food, beverage, retail, entertainments and attraction management.
