Danish students visit National Grid Gasholder sites in Liverpool

L to R: Sarah Helby (Land Regeneration Advisor - National Grid) Paul Quance (Contracts Director – The Coleman Group), Leigh Ward (Gasholder Demolition Advisor – National Grid) students Lise, Mikkel and Eline at the Wavertree site.

3 Danish urban design students have discovered the nation's industrial heritage during a visit to Liverpool to see some of National Grid's Gasholders.

National Grid is undertaking a nationwide programme to dismantle Gasholders, as they are no longer used and removing them provides the potential for land to be brought back into beneficial use.

The 3 students, Mikkel, Eline and Lise, from Aalborg University, were delighted with the opportunity to visit the sites, at both Wavertree and Bootle, as part of their Masters Degree courses.

Lise said:- "We'd like to thank National Grid for letting us have a close look at the gasholders and the sites. It will really help with our studies and final dissertations. It's been great to understand the history of these structures and what a feat of engineering it is to remove them."

National Grid and contractor partner The Coleman Group are currently dismantling 4 unused Gasholders, at their site off Spofforth Road, in Wavertree, Liverpool.

Chris Taylor, Land Regeneration Manager at National Grid, said:- "We work hard to engage with the local community when we are working in an area, often with local Schools, as we have done in Wavertree. However, it's a 1st for us to welcome students from so far away, but we were delighted to help and wish the students every success with their dissertations."

Work on the Wavertree site is expected to be complete later this year, with no plans for how the land will be used in the future.  Any future development would be subject to planning.  Local residents with questions about the work can contact National Grid on:- 0800 8199071.

Sue Shirt, Stonewater's Executive Director, Housing said:-  "We want to provide customers with the best housing service possible. These homes are around 60 miles away from our nearest office in Elland, West Yorkshire, and we believe our customers would benefit from a more locally focused housing management team.
