Southport's Memorial Gardens have been getting a Spring clean

Spring cleaning on 5 April 2018, on Lord Street, Southport's War Memorial Gardens.

ON 19 April 2018, we court up with Pauline Morris, Sharon Gregory Wareing and other volunteers tending the gardens, yet again, on Southport's historic Lord Street. Due to cutbacks in recent years this group has helped keep the flower beds on Lord Street looking stunning for both residents and visitors alike, plus along the way winning the Town several national awards.

The Grade II War Memorial, known locally as The Monument, was originally dedicated to those who gave their lives in World War 1, when it was built in 1923. It soon became the central focus of Lord Street, due to its unusually grand scale, for a small provincial Town. Today it also carries the names of the fallen from Second World War and subsequent conflicts since and remains a major landmark within the Town Centre.

As 2018 will be the centenary of the end of the 1st World War, the Memorial will become even important significant. As normal the group has to plant, litter picking and also help to keep the long rectangular Pool of Remembrance, and the fountains in good order. A hard task, that is make even more impressive as they are doing this for free!

This group's work also helps every year to boost the tourism by helping to keeping this historic environment, by retained the character the 19th and early 20th Century civic and commercial centre, that had once inspired Napoleon III, of France, to create the boulevards of Paris!

If you see then out and want to help, pop over to them and ask them for more information about how you can also help them to help you community.

Did you know? Southport's War Memorial includes the names of 5 Victoria Cross winners.
