Getting ready for Southport's Armed Forces Day 2018

LOCAL SSAFA (The Armed Forces Charity) Veterans, based at RAF Woodvale, are preparing to hold this years Armed Forces Day event and parade, on 1 July 2018, at the Town Hall (Princess Diana Memorial Gardens) in front of the Southport Town Hall. They are very proud to be organising it again this year and are gearing up for the big day.

Event program:-

Starting the event off with a Drumhead Service, at:- 10:00am, in the Town Hall Gardens (Princess Diana memorial Gardens.)

Parade with a military band starting at:- 10:30am, on Chapel Street and heading up Hoghton Street, Hill Street, on to Lord Street, then taking the salute at Southport Town Hall.

There will be modern and vintage military vehicles in front of the Atkinson, living History Group.

Army, Air and Sea cadets will also be taking part.

There will be live vintage music from the George Formby Band, as well as:- United Voice Choir, Ukulele Mistrals, Just Voices.

Southport Sea Cadet Band.

► The event will end at around 4pm.

All Veterans are welcome to take part in the Parade, including any in wheelchairs and scooters. If you have served in Her Majesty's Armed Forces regulars and reservists of all ages can take part in the parade.

Calling all young musicians and singers

IF you go to School or college and sing or play an instrument you can enter Southport Young Musician of the Year 2018. Trinity Arts, who organise the event, is delighted to announce that Whittakers Schoolwear is now sponsoring this prestigious competition, and that current champion Angelina Dorlin-Barlow will be judging the Most Promising category.

Angelina said:- "Southport Young Musician is a great experience. It's made me a much better musician as I've been told from someone else's point of view how to improve my playing and singing. It's a good performance opportunity and it's lovely to appreciate the performances of other contestants! It's a great competition and there are so many benefits to take away."

Lorna Brown, of Whittakers Schoolwear, said that they were delighted to be the competition's sponsors. "We're thrilled to be a part of this event, which is helping young people learn and succeed."

Categories include:-

Voice.

Brass.

Strings.

Woodwind.

Percussion.

Piano.

Students between Year 3 through to Year 13, 6th Form may enter the competition, which will be held on 9 July to 13 July 2018, at Holy Trinity Church, Southport. It costs ₤3 to enter and the overall winner will receive a trophy, ₤100 and the opportunity to perform, at Holy Trinity Church, Southport. There is also a runner up prize and a Most Promising prize.
