There are 2 main types of skin cancer:- non melanoma and melanoma.
Around 136,000 cases of non melanoma skin
cancer are diagnosed in the UK each year which makes it the most common type of
cancer by far. It is unlikely to spread, very treatable and the earlier it is
diagnosed the easier it is to treat.
Melanoma is the 5th most common cancer in the UK.
Around 15,400 people are diagnosed with melanoma in the UK each year. It is more common in people with fairer or freckly skin.
Around 27% of new cases occur in people aged 75 and over.
Unlike other cancer types, malignant melanoma also occurs relatively often
in people of younger ages.
Debbie Smith, from the mobile information team, said:- "Most skin cancers
are caused by exposure to the sun. This may be long term exposure, or short
periods of intense sun exposure and burning. Using sunbeds can also increase
your risk. Our team will be on hand to answer questions about sun safety and for
any other cancer-related queries."

Nominate your Hospital People's Health Hero
DO you know a member of staff working at our Hospitals who deserves special recognition? Members of the public are being invited to nominate a member of staff at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust for an honour in the 10th annual staff awards. Silas Nicholls, Chief Executive, said:- "It's a special year for the NHS this year. We're celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the founding of the service in 1948. So, we're making the Trust's 10th annual staff awards special too with a new look. We want to share patients' and the public's pride in our staff by seeing them nominated in the Time to Shine People's Health Hero Award. It's a fantastic opportunity for individuals or families to show their appreciation to a staff member who is the jewel in their team. They will have shown drive, enthusiasm or good sense of humour, inspiring those around them, especially in times of difficulty or stress."
Nominations for the 'People's Health Hero Award' are open until Sunday, 19 August 2018. Any member of staff, in any role, is eligible for a nomination providing they have worked for the Trust over the past 12 months. Nominations can be made from the Trust's website or in writing to the Chief Executive at Southport Hospital. Time to Shine is the new name for the Trust's staff awards previously known as the:- 'Pride Awards.' They will be presented for the 1st time at Formby Hall Golf Club and Spa, on Friday, 12 October 2018.
