Southport Flower Show 2018 -
Part 2
Photographs by Patrick Trollope.
WHAT an amazing 4 days of floral
delights at the Southport Flower Show. If you did not know, the 89th Southport
Flower show was held over 16 August to 19 August 2018, on Victoria Park,
Southport.
The event is Britain's biggest independent flower show and attracts green
fingered horticulturalists from all over the world and this year was not
exception. That is no joke, as we bumped into people who had come just for the
show from near Christchurch, in New Zealand and also a family from Fountain
Valley, California, along with others from Canada and Australia, to name just a
few countries.
This year's event, despite the weather being very strange, was extremely well
attended on most days and had a fantastic mix of side shows and entertainment
for all ages, along with the return of the massive HM Prison's floral displays
within the Grand Floral Marquee.
This year also had a new attraction, the LEGO builder's workshops that took
place on the Friday and Saturday.
VIP,s this year included celebrity gardener broadcasters, Christine Walkden,
Carol Klein, David Domoney and Matthew Wilson. Also attending were BBC's
Countryfile presenter and former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Anita Rani,
who also did a talk at the show.
For the kids, the Children's TV Star Justin Fletcher, known to CBeebies viewers
for his many characters including:- ‘Mr Tumble,' lead the family entertainment on
both Saturday and Sunday.
A series of celebrity chefs will be on show at the demonstration kitchen
including:- Simon Rimmer and Great British Bake Off stars, Flo Atkins and Luis
Trayano. Interestingly, Chef Brian Mellor was celebrating his birthday and
hosting the demonstration kitchens!
This year, both inside and outside, the exhibitors to the show displayed their
passion for all things that grow, in what was 1 of the best displays yet, even
though flowers this year have been harder to produce than normal due to the
weather conditions. Many of the garden displays also encouraged visitors to buy
directly from local growers during the Show.
One of the most amazing floral marquees to visit was the Amateur Growers
Marquee. This year's displays gave the professional growers a run for their
money. Also the Floral Design Marquee was fascinating to visit, with lots of
interesting designs and arrangements.
If you did not get the opportunity to go or want to rekindle your memories of
