Local NHS trust produces Stoptober animation to help people quit for good

STOPTOBER has driven over one million quit attempts to date and is the biggest mass quit attempt in the country. It's based on research that shows if you can stop smoking for 28 days, you are 5 times more likely to stay smokefree for good. To help people prepare and remain smokefree during Stoptober, North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has produced a short animation, packed with useful tips and advice. Stoptober offers a range of support to help people on their quitting journey, including an app, daily emails, e-cigarettes and lots of encouragement from the Stoptober online community. In your adult years the lifestyle choices you make can dramatically increase your chances of becoming ill. Smoking is still the biggest cause of preventable deaths in England, accounting for more than 80,000 deaths each year.  Alison Foster, Smokefree Lead for the Trust said:- "Making changes can improve your health right away and considerably increase your chances of staying healthy. Some of the benefits to your health include:- carbon monoxide levels, blood pressure and pulse returning to normal, breathing becoming easier and energy levels increasing."  To view the animation and for further information on the benefits of quitting smoking, visit:- NWBH.NHS.UK/Stop-Smoking. Merseyside Roofer to take on Southern Ocean in Biggest Round the World Yacht Race

LES Perry, a 59 year old Roofer, from Barnston, Merseyside, is gearing up to take part in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race after watching the world's toughest endurance challenge departed from Liverpool, in August 2017.

Speaking about how he came to sign up, Les explained:- "I was given a birthday gift voucher by my Sister Sue for a day's sailing on an ex-Clipper Race yacht on the Solent. During the day the crew explained how the yacht had circumnavigated the world 5 times and that the latest Clipper Race was leaving Liverpool the next day. I went to see the start of the race and sent off my application that very evening!"

Explaining his spontaneity, Les added:- "I was still in 'ocean sailing mode' from my trip the day before, coupled with the fact that I was sailing my own dinghy in a club race that afternoon, I just had to seize the moment!"

The Southern Ocean part of the epic circumnavigation will form the third Leg of the Clipper 2019-20 Race which is due to start from the UK in the summer. Les and his future crewmates should expect no easy ride; nicknamed the Southern Ocean Sleigh Ride, Les will experience some of the most exhilarating and testing conditions of the entire circumnavigation as teams dip into the notoriously strong winds of the Roaring Forties.

One of the best places to fully appreciate Mother Nature in her most raw and powerful glory, the Southern Ocean Leg will be a good match for Les who will do nothing by halves. He says:- "I chose this part of the Clipper Race because in life I always have to take the most difficult path when facing a challenge, or go back and do it again if I choose an easier route. The Southern Ocean with its fabled huge waves and storms along with immense solitude; it seemed perfect. Coupled with the fact that I would be sailing to Australia, where my parents took myself and 2 sisters way back in 1959 when I was only 3 months old, it was an obvious choice for me."

Luckily for Les, who has the incentive of a holiday in Australia with his wife at the other end of the challenge, the Clipper Race has just announced Musto as the new Technical Clothing Partner. Musto, which is renowned for its high performance sailing kit, will enable Les and his crewmates to tackle even the most extreme ocean conditions as they use the striking gold kit in the Southern Ocean.

Despite a wealth of dinghy experience at a yacht club in North Wales, where 2 other members have signed up for part of the race, and sailing with friends and in the calm waters of the Mediterranean, the Clipper Race is a completely new challenge for Les who cites sleep deprivation as one of the toughest parts to overcome.

In preparation for the race, Les will need to pass 4 levels of Clipper Race training. Whilst he has a while to wait before his race begins, Les has already completed 2 levels of training and gained some further experience with a Clipper 70 delivery back to its home in Portsmouth, UK, after the race concluded, in Liverpool, in July 2018.

Speaking about the training, Les said:- "The training has been excellent and I truly now have friends from all over the world who regularly update and communicate with me, and one American friend in particular sending highly amusing and lengthy blogs of his experience on board with us all."

Unsurprisingly, Les took to navigating a heeled over Clipper 70 racing yacht quickly. He explains:- "The deck work was no problem to me as I am a roofer by trade, and so it was like walking on a roof, however getting about below deck and getting into my top bunk at 3am left me exasperated, exhausted and educated all at once!"

And when it comes to his friends and family, Les said:- "Some of them are jealous, some of them are very impressed and the other set, including my Mother, just think I am insane!"

Think you have what it takes to take on one of the toughest endurance tests in the planet? Would you like to race across the Southern Ocean? You, too, could join Les and hundreds of other non-professional sailors in the Clipper 2019 to 2020 Race. No experience necessary, all training provided.
