Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu visits Formby on last day of Diocese of Liverpool Tour

THE Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, visited Formby Point and St Luke's Church on Saturday, 9 March 2019, in his mission to get bring God into more people's lives. The day started on a very windy Lifeboat Road Car Park, when locals, many from Formby churches of all denominations, met up with the National Trust Rangers to help clean the boardwalk and clear rubbish from the beach at Formby Point. Then, after all had returned to the car park, the Archbishop gave a very engaging and apposite sermon, reflecting on both religion and our stewardship of the planet. A video of these activities on Formby beach area, can be seen below. Then, absolutely on cue, in response to a prayer:- 'let there be light,' the sun came out. The group then headed over to St Luke's Church for some excellent refreshments. If you do not already know, the Archbishop was born into Uganda's Buffalo clan (Mbogo) and surprised those attending the community event in the Church Meeting Room by blessing the food in his native Swahili. As Dr John Sentamu will retire from his post as Archbishop of York, on 7 June 2020, this might be the last chance for many of us to meet this very charismatic, but down to earth cleric. In our view, if you have not met him, he is what all Archbishops should be like. Considering he is 70, it is interesting that he can capture the attention of young and old alike and, with a church eager to encourage people to follow its teachings, we think it desperately needs more missionaries like him. If you attended this event, or any of his other events during his tour of the Liverpool Diocese, we would love to hear from you.
