Hugh Baird University Centre undergraduates consider their next steps

UNDERGRADUATES at the Hugh Baird University Centre are benefitting from a series of events involving industry experts aimed at enhancing their career readiness and preparing them to embark on their future career paths. The Spotlight on Employment events have been created by the University Centre itself and involve a variety of organisations across a range of sectors such as Hays Recruitment, Shop Direct, Matalan and Claire House Children's Hospice from the not for profit sector. Throughout the events, students hear from leading figures within organisations about their careers, their achievements and the challenges they have overcome. In addition, undergraduates also benefit from careers advice and guidance, job interview tips, support with graduate scheme and internship applications and advice on networking for business.

Colette Mawdsley, Dean of Higher Education at the Hugh Baird University Centre, said:- "Students often aren't aware of their own skills and experience or how to take that huge 1st step from full time education to career. They need more meaningful careers advice. This is where we feel our Spotlight on Employment events along with our well established Careers Advice and Guidance service can really help our undergraduates to become career ready. Over the course of this series of events, students will rub shoulders with some major figures from the Liverpool City Region's business community and they will receive actionable advice from people who make hiring decisions on a daily basis. I would personally like to thank all the organisations who are supporting our events and who are giving up their time free of charge to help prepare and develop our undergraduates here at Hugh Baird University Centre."

Speaking following a Spotlight on Employment event delivered by Clare Doig, Hospice Lead Nurse at Claire House Hospice, student Layla Saunders, said:- "The event today was a great opportunity for us to hear from an expert working in the charity sector. Before the talk today, I had very little knowledge about the range of possibilities and job roles within this sector. The talk also helped me to understand the importance of developing my employability skills and work readiness."

Clare Doig from Claire House said:- "I was delighted to be given the opportunity to be part of the Spotlight on Employment event and talk to the students regarding the amazing work we do at Claire House. This was a fantastic event that gave the students a real insight into our sector and the range of opportunities available to them once they complete their studies at the Hugh Baird University Centre."

Event Is Out Of This World

Over the moon to be in Liverpool: Britain’s first astronaut Helen Sharman heads to the city as part of River Festival Liverpool.

BRITAIN'S 1st Astronaut is heading to the City in June as part of River Festival Liverpool and will take part in 2 unique events under the huge 23ft replica Earth in Liverpool Cathedral. Just last week it was announced that Luke Jerram's installation Gaia is coming to Liverpool as part of the festival's creative programme. The artwork will be on public display from Saturday, 25 May 2019 and a series of events will be programmed to take place under the Earth, until Sunday, 2 June 2019.

Helen Sharman CMG OBE said:- "I'm delighted to be taking part in River Festival Liverpool in the prestigious Liverpool Cathedral under Luke Jerram's amazing Earth art work Gaia. This event should be truly out of this world."

Director for Culture in Liverpool, Claire McColgan, said:- "We are delighted to welcome such an inspirational figure as Helen to Liverpool and I can't think of a more fitting location than under the Earth!  It's a real coup to welcome her to Liverpool; her achievements are incredible and I'm sure both her talks will capture the imaginations of the audience.  To hear from someone who has travelled in space is fantastic, but Helen is the 1st Briton in space which adds a new dimension and a real gravitas to the event, that I'm sure it will be hugely popular."

The Very Rev Dr Sue Jones, Dean of Liverpool said:- "The opportunity to hear such an inspirational person as Helen Sharman, the UK's 1st Astronaut, talking about viewing the Earth from space while encountering Luke Jerram's Gaia installation in Liverpool Cathedral will be an outstanding experience; it will be out of this world."

The 2 events Helen will take part in are:-

'Out of This World'; Taking place on Sunday, 2 June 2019, from 6.30pm, Helen will talk about her experience of space travel and the intense preparation that went into her launching into the history books in May 1991. She will touch upon the meticulous training and preparation as well as reflecting on the importance of teamwork, leadership, communication and motivation. Helen will also take part in a question and answer session. Tickets cost:- ₤12 for adults and ₤10 for under 16's (over 10's only) plus ₤1 booking fee.

'How to be an Astronaut'; This is a private event aimed at School pupils, from Year 6 and above. During this session, Helen will focus on the wonder of science, talking about her 8 days spent orbiting the Earth and her time living and working on the MIR Space Station. Any Schools interested should visit:- TheRiverFestival.Co.UK.  Tickets will be ₤5 per student and teachers go free with every 10 pupils. Additional staff/adult tickets will be ₤8 per person.
