Marking the 100th Anniversary since Armistice Day and the end of World War 1
Photos and video by Patrick Trollope.

WORLD War 1 was meant to be the:- "War to end all wars" and affected nearly every corner of the World, between 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918. Over 30 nations took part in the 'Great War,' as it was known to those who took part in it. The majority joined on the side of the 'Allies,' including:- Britain, France, Serbia, Russia, Italy and the United States. They were opposed by Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire. When Britain and its Empire entered into the war, following the assassination of the heir to the Habsburg throne, it led to a truly global conflict, fought on a geographical scale never seen before. Rapid development of military technology, outpaced strategy making, on all sides, resulting in what was the most bloody war imaginable. What people tend to forget is that in this war, it was not just fighting in the trenches, but also at sea, and for the very 1st time, in the air. Although Britain had been at war with Germany since August 1914, the 1st German airship attack, infamously the Zeppelin raid on London, only took place 9 months later. The Zeppelins throughout the war, threatened much of England and on 19 January 1915, bombs were dropped on Sheringham, Yarmouth, King's Lynn and other East Coast Towns of England. This meant, that for the very first time, it was not just the civilians and army on the front lines who were at risk of attack. The horrors of World War 1 came to an abrupt end with the signing of the treaty, that ended the battle on the Western Front, on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, of 1918. This date and time not only ended fighting in the trenches, but the War. As a result all nations affected marked this occasion with acts of Remembrance, leading on to the UK's development of Remembrance Sunday, in hopes that the fallen will be remembered, and that we would not repeat our mistakes. On Merseyside ,100 years since the end of World War 1, we not only remembered those who fell in that war, but all other wars since. Veterans joined in the march during the parades outside St George's Hall Liverpool, in Southport at Lord Street War Memorial, in Hamilton Square, Birkenhead and in Formby, along with other Cenotaphs, memorials and in Churches. This year, it was not just the placing wreaths that took place, as on Formby Beach crowds gathered at:- 'Pages of the Sea, the Armistice' an artistic event commission, delivered by Danny Boyle. Later in Formby, the annual Royal British Legion Parade took place. We have video of the Parades, in Southport and in Formby at the end of our photographic coverage of the 2 events.
