Ask the Local Expert - Southport's Felicity Hat Hire Owner Helen Takes The Hot Seat!

....Please note that the item below is a sponsored feature....

LAST week we added a some extra time to our new feature for our readers to send in questions along with our very 1st business owner to take the hot seat, Helen Woods, to reply to 5 of the best questions. We must say that we are extremely pleased with the response and all you have sent into our email box. they have been a string of very hard questions for Helen which resulted in our asking her to add an extra question to the list. If case you may not already know, Helen owns Felicity Couture or, as most people know it, Felicity Hat Hire, a designer hat hire shop, located within Southport, that was established in 1988. For those intending to Attend a Wedding, a Day at the Races, a Baptism or any other special event, don't worry, Helen stocks an unrivalled collection of top quality designer hats, fascinators and accessories for you to hire or, in some cases, to buy. So we expected lots of questions and we received them. Sadly, we could not use all the questions you sent in, but we have picked the best 6 questions for all of you; they cover most of the points our readers have been asking about.

These are your questions:-

1. Jillian, from Birkdale, asked:- "I have an issue with hats as they don't always fit me correctly and I have short hair. Would it be more appropriate for me to use a fascinator when attending a wedding or a formal event? If yes, what types of fascinators should I have?"

Helen says:- "Dear Jillian, yes smaller headpieces on headbands are much better for short hair. Especially the disc types that sit to one side. The headbands can be very thin metal or self coloured. Some of the smaller fascinators (the feather ones) now have clips or combs that are great for short hair."

2. Samantha, who lives in Southport asked:- "I have been told that I have to look at matching the hats with my skin tone. Should I get the hat 1st and the match the dress or the other way around?"

Helen:- "Dear Samantha, we always suggest getting your dress 1st and then your hat. Hats can match your dress and/or your accessories and the colour you choose will depend on your hair colour and your skin tone. We have noticed that customers can look amazing wearing a dress of a certain colour, but it sometimes doesn't work as a colour next to their face, so then we match accessories such as nude or silver etc."

3. Favia from Liverpool's question was:- "How do I socially kiss while wearing a hat at weddings or should wide brimmed hats should avoid if I have to do this?"

Helen suggests:- "Dear Favia, we love wide brimmed hats and "air kissing" is a traditional hat wearing technique!"

4. Jaclyn Smith, from Crosby, was interested to find out:- "When, if ever, should a women remove her hat, for example when observing a 2 minutes of silence?"

Helen has replied:- "Dear Jaclyn, ladies do not need to remove their hats on any occasion that we are aware of. During commemorative occasions and weddings Ladies can keep their hats on. Traditionally it is only when the Mother of the Bride removes hers that the other female guests can remove theirs. The female Royals keep their hats on all day and historically this was so as to not have to redo their hair at lunch etc."

5. Abigail Adams wanted to know:-  "What is the significance of hat colours?"

Helens response:- "Dear Abigail, as far as I'm aware there is no modern significance to hat colours except that black historically was for mourning and white was avoided so as not to upstage the Bride. But we now do lots of black and white hats for all occasions."

6. Pat, from West Derby, asked:- "Should hats compliment the shoes and bag...?"

"Dear Pat, traditionally hats matched all of your accessories, but now we usually see 2 out of 3 matching. So that shoes and bag may match, but the hat matches your outfit. Or hat and bag match and your outfit and shoes are a different colour. But there is no definite rule and sometimes a complete clash of colours looks amazing depending on your dress style / colour."

Celebrating sensational students

Golden Girl: Liverpool City Council’s Sensory Support Service Awards guest of honour, Lora Fachie, MBE.

LIVERPOOL'S student stars are set to shine at St George's Hall, as the City Council recognises the hard work and dedication of children with visual and hearing impairments. The annual Sensory Support Service Awards ceremony took place at St George's Hall, on Thursday, 17 October 2019.

The awards are presented to young people who have overcome barriers to make great progress in mainstream Schools. Some of the students will be recognised for their academic achievement, others for their personal development and growing confidence; all the award winners will be acknowledged for their determination to succeed.

A total of 8 young people received awards on the night for a range of achievements.

Guests of honour at this year's event included Liverpool Paralympic cycling champion Lora Fachie, MBE and the City Council's Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills Cllr Barbara Murray.

Lora, 31, who lost her sight at the age of 5, took the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games by storm, winning gold in individual pursuit and bronze in the time trial.

There are currently 112 visually impaired and 275 hearing impaired children being supported by the City Council's Sensory Support Service in mainstream Schools in Liverpool.

Liverpool City Council's Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills Cllr Barbara Murray, said:- "The Sensory Support Service Awards are a real highlight of the City's academic year. The children who will receive awards are exceptional young people who have refused to let their impairments hold them back. They have done themselves and their families proud and are fantastic role models for other young people. The event is also an opportunity for us to celebrate the amazing work of our Sensory Support Service team who work with these young people to make sure that they can reach their full potential."

Liverpool Paralympic Gold medallist, Lora Fachie, MBE said:- "It's a real honour to be presenting the children and young people of Liverpool with their awards. Inside each of these young people has the spirit and determination to achieve that this City is famous for. As someone who rides in tandem, I know all about the power of teamwork and how every champion needs support to get them to the top. It's clear that the Council's sensory team are doing a magnificent job in encouraging the children to do their best and I look forward to meeting them on the night."
