Southport Astronomical Society's Observatory Open Day

THE final open day at Hesketh Park Observatory takes place on:- Sunday, 28 November 2021, from:- 10am until 4pm. Come along to discover the story of the telescope, discover its users including:- Joseph Baxendale; Southport's 1st official weather recorder and keen Astronomer and his son Joseph Baxendale Jr, who was more interested in meteorology. The telescope is an amazing piece of Victorian engineering, using clockwork and heavy weights to drive the telescope. It was built in 1869, just 1 year after Hesketh Park opened! Please be advised that there are steep stairs to climb to enter the observatory. Entry is free, but donations are always welcome! For more information visit the Southport Astronomical Society's website:- SouthportAstro.Org.

Churchtown Village's Christmas Lights Switch On

IT is 1 of the most historic and picture postcard parts of Sefton, that many overlook, but at Christmas, the Village Centre looks extra amazing. Sadly, last year they could not hold the annual Churchtown Village Lights Switch On, due to the Covid Pandemic restrictions, but despite the issues, its businesses put on an amazing job of bringing an added sparkle to Christmas.

This year, they have also done an amazing job and it is well worth taking a trip to see. Unfortunately, not all the businesses have been able to keep trading since the last Switch On, but those who have remained have really done an amazing job and as a result, they joined forces to celebrated the start of Christmas by putting on a slimed down version of the annual Village Lights Switch On. Ok, it might not have had the road closures and the fairground, along the other things that normal attend, this oddly this did not seem to matter.  Despite the lack of a main stage, their was still be lots to enjoy, thanks to the hard work of a small team of volunteers, lead by Dot Howell, owner of the Dorothy Mae Salon, that is on Botanic Road. In fact it might have made an even more special night, as it was extremely refreshing and festive, with a overwhelming feeling of the very warm, local community spirit, that put it together.  We are told that the Village, as in previous years, will again be hosting small events in the build up to Christmas.  Please visit this amazing part of our Liverpool City Region. Take some time out and take a look at what these small businesses have to offer.
