Extra payments needed to tackle social care staffing crisis, says Bill Esterson MP

THE Sefton Central MP, Bill Esterson, has asked the Government to consider funding recruitment and retention payments for care workers to help tackle the staffing crisis in the sector. MP Mr Esterson recently met with care providers in the constituency and discussed the difficulties faced due to difficulties recruiting adequate staff. Mr Esterson had previously asked Parliamentary Questions suggesting an uplift in universal credit for those taking care work, and a change to the visa requirements to allow care providers to recruit staff from abroad.

Mr Esterson said:- "Care providers in my constituency are telling me they are in desperate need of assistance. Remember it is our elderly and most vulnerable who need these workers to help care for them and keep them safe. The Government has so far refused to take on board suggestions regarding recruitment and retention payments and changes to work visa requirements. They have simply pushed this on to the Local Authorities and care providers and offered just ₤162m across the whole country to tackle this crisis. That's just a few hundred thousand pounds for each local authority. Sefton needs millions of pounds each year if it is to attract care staff and pay then properly. Otherwise, elderly and disabled people will continue to be short changed in the care they receive. Ministers blame Councils and care providers, but it is Central Government that sets the budget and it is Central Government that is starving Councils, care homes and home care providers of funds. Because of the Conservative Government's ideology our elderly will suffer without the care they need."

In response to Mr Esterson's question, Health Minister Gillian Keegan said:- "We have no current plans to issue recruitment and retention payments directly to social care staff. The vast majority of care workers are employed by private sector providers who ultimately set their pay and remuneration, independent of Central Government. To provide additional support to the sector over the winter, on October 21st we announced a new ₤162.5 million Workforce Recruitment and Retention Fund (WRRF). We expect Local Authorities to work closely with care providers on how this funding is spent, which may include:- 1 off recruitment and retention payments. We are continuing to work closely with providers, Councils, and partners to assess workforce capaCity pressures and to consider what further action may be necessary."
