Final call for families to #GetConnected

FAMILIES in Liverpool have a month left if they want to #GetConnected in this School year. Families across Liverpool eligible for free School meals will receive a text message from the Council reminding them that they are eligible to take up the Council's offer of a free 12 month 4G connection. The commitment to get vulnerable families online is 1 of the Council's 10 Post Pandemic pledges. Families receive a MiFi router, meaning they can get online quickly and simply avoiding the need for an engineer visit. Over 550 families have been connected since the start of the year with successful applications coming from all of the City's 30 wards. Most connections have been sent to homes in:- Princes Park, Speke Garston, and Norris Green wards. This year's offer is due to close at the end of this term, Thursday 14 April, and will re-open at the start of the new School year in September. Over 10,000 families who are eligible to receive income related School meals were contacted by letter at the beginning of this year explaining that they were entitled to take up the offer.

Cabinet member for Education and Skills, Cllr Tom Logan, said:- "We know that families are busy and that letters can sometimes get overlooked, so this week we are sending out text messages to all the eligible families we have get to hear from to remind them that the #GetConnected offer is still available. We know from the Pandemic that digital access is no longer a nice to have. It is a necessity today for everyone to be able to get on with their lives, not least when supporting children in their education or looking for employment opportunities for older family members. Although we will re-open the offer in September, we don't want anyone who would benefit in the coming months to miss out; so look out for the text message and fill out the online form to #GetConnected."

If families want to take up the Council offer they should read the full terms and conditions at:- Liverpool.Gov.UK/GetConnected and complete the online form.

CGIUKI and CBI respond to latest 'Parker Review' data

ON 16 March 2022, the Chartered Governance Institute UK and Ireland (CGIUK) informed the media that they "welcomed" the publication of the update report from Sir John Parker's review committee on:- 'Improving the Ethnic Diversity of UK Boards.'

Peter Swabey, FCG Policy and Research Director, at The Chartered Governance Institute for England and Ireland (CGIUKI), said:- "We welcome publication today of the latest update of the Parker Review, showing the original target set by the review committee has nearly been met, with only 3 FTSE 100 companies which do not now have at least 1 Director from an ethnic minority background on their board. This increase in board diversity mirrors the results of The Institute's own survey of FTSE 350 companies, published in November 2021. Our Bellwether survey of the FTSE 350 showed that 55 per cent of respondents consider their boards to be ethnically diverse. This was substantial progress on our December 2019 report when just 29 per cent of respondents considered their boards diverse, demonstrating the pace of change. This is very positive news and sets the standard for FTSE 250 Boards to match this success by 2024. The institute champions the importance of diversity of thought at board level and governance professionals are actively engaged in supporting the Chair to improve the dynamics in the board for the best performing team and board decisions. We have seen great and positive changes in gender diversity in recent years and would encourage greater attention on improving ethnic diversity both at board level and supporting the talent pipeline so that the pool of board level talent is increased. The governance professional plays a unique role as bridge between the board and the organisation, supporting the realisation of a common culture and corporate purpose. Visibility of an ethnically diverse board and senior leadership sends an important signal to employees and investors of that culture. However, as we have said with gender diversity, the central issue remains in the executive pipeline, and it is disappointing to see so few executive directors from ethnic minorities. Companies should develop a diverse pipeline of board ready candidates and include these individuals in future succession planning. They should also seek to enhance transparency and disclosure of their records and track progress against their diversity objectives."

Also adding their voice was the CBI President and Chair of Change the Race Ratio, Lord Karan Bilimoria, who said:- "FTSE 100 firms have stepped up when it comes to ethnic diversity at the top. Now it's time for those last few companies to follow suit and end the all white boardroom. UK plc has reached an important way point, and it's time to step up the pace of progress. The FTSE 250 must show the same effort and focus to improve ethnic diversity at senior levels. The Parker Review has created a groundswell of action which has led to real results in the boardroom. Government needs to match business progress by bringing in mandatory ethnicity pay gap reporting in the same way they have done for gender. Our Change the Race Ratio campaign exists to help businesses to improve, not only to measure their progress. I encourage all companies to sign up."
