Did you eat Fish and chips on Good Friday?

FOR religious reasons or not, it has become many people's custom to exchange meat for fish on Good Friday, based on a tradition that has its origins in Christian teachings, with the disciples abstaining from eating meat on the day commemorating Jesus' crucifixion, so we headed over to see if this was the case in Southport on Good Friday. So, what could be a better excuse to guzzle down our beloved hot dish consisting of fried fish in batter, served with chips on a trip to the British seaside? Well you have to admit, a trip to the seaside just isn't complete without England's signature dish. Fish and Chips forms many our sensory cues that we are at the seaside, but do fish and chips taste better at the seaside? For that reason The Kings Plaice, on Lord Street, who are keeping the traditional Fish and Chip dish alive, by using Fish that has been bought at Fleetwood Market fresh each day. Also, why do we associate the smell of fish and chips, the oil and vinegar, which often pervades the air around coastal restaurants and cafes, drifting on a sea breeze, with our childhood holidays? Within Southport, the Town's restaurants do all kinds of seafood and competition for winning over hungry patrons is extremely high. So it was not surprising that on Good Friday, at The Kings Plaice, queues, waiting patiently, were extremely long. We asked many of those attending what they thought. Most said that it brought back fond childhood memories of tucking into a fish supper as a child. Nearly everyone we asked said they had good memories associated with fish and chips. A few also said ice-cream was also an essential part of the British Seaside experience, but we want to hear from our readers... What seaside destination memories do you recall when easting fish and chips? On Good Friday, we heard many saying it was walking down the Promenade, visiting funfairs and amusement arcades, with some also adding visiting Southport's Victorian Pier. Interestingly, locals recalled trips to East Sussex and Isle of Wight, where as many day trippers and visitors said it was memories of Southport, Blackpool and also the Wirral that they recalled. If you have any photos and you can give us permission to use them, please also do send them over as well, to illustrate your memories.
