WaterSafe reveals top 5 plumbing tips when moving home

WATERSAFE, the UK national accreditation body for approved plumbers, has put together its 5 top tips to help people moving home in Merseyside.

The plumbing register asked its members for their top advice for customers moving into a new home. These included:-

  • Find and test your internal stop tap; where your water supply comes into your home; as you may need to turn the water off in an emergency.

  • Check the boiler's service history and that there is a lid and adequate insulation on the cold water tank (usually in the loft), and always use a Gas Safe registered engineer for servicing.

  • Look out for leaky toilets, taps and radiators; tell tale signs are low water pressure, rust and water stains on the floors or carpets, or mould on ceilings and walls.

  • Find out if your home has any lead water pipes; these are shiny when scraped with a screwdriver (always wash your hands after testing). Lead can be harmful so it's a good idea to replace these.

  • Check if you have a water meter as you will be billed for the amount of water you use if you do. It's usually in the ground outside the front of your home, or inside near the stop tap.

WaterSafe has also produced a short top tips video can be seen online at:- WaterSafe.Org.UK.

WaterSafe is the national register of qualified, approved contractors, supported by all UK water companies and the drinking water regulators. It was set up to promote competent installers and help keep the UK's drinking water safe in homes and businesses.

Julie Spinks, Director of WaterSafe, said:- "Spring is a popular time for people to start thinking about moving home. Our members report they then get frequent calls about plumbing related issues in customers' new properties. We've got lots of free advice on our website around what to look out for when it comes to plumbing, pipes, taps and fittings but would always recommend calling in an approved plumber rather than trying to fix things yourself. WaterSafe approved contractors have specific training in the water fittings regulations and byelaws, protecting you from poor installation or the use of non-compliant plumbing products that could contaminate your drinking water. This ensures your drinking water stays wholesome and healthy at the tap."

A kind hearted student with a passion for volunteering has been named as a Coronation Champion

EMILIA McRobie, a 3rd year Education and English student, at Edge Hill University, has been recognised for her role as President of the University's:- 'Uni Boob Team,' a society representing breast cancer awareness charity CoppaFeel!

She has also previously volunteered with children's tutoring and befriending service Success4All and as a:- School Football Coach, Teaching Assistant and Librarian.

Alongside her studies and volunteering, Emilia has spent many years caring for her Mum Emma who suffers from multiple chronic conditions including:- fibromyalgia and lupus.

The 21 year old from Gateshead is 1 of just 500 Coronation Champions selected by:- 'The Royal Voluntary Service,' in celebration of:- 'The Coronation of:- King Charles and Queen Camilla.'

Emilia said:- "When I found out I had been selected I was so overwhelmed! I have never taken part in volunteering to gain awards but it feels really special to get some recognition for all the hard work I have put in for charities throughout the years. Volunteering is a massive part of my life and I don't think I would have the opportunities I do now without it. Working to support CoppaFeel! over the last 2 years has enabled me to give back to the community as well as having a creative outlet to do something different alongside my degree."

Emilia's exceptional hard work and passion for helping others prompted Edge Hill Scholarship Officer Zoe Clifford to nominate her for a Coronation Champion.

Zoe said:- "Emilia has won 2 Edge Hill University scholarships as a result of her volunteering during her time at Edge Hill. The dedication, enthusiasm and commitment she has shown, specifically through the hard and testing times of the Covid19 Pandemic, is phenomenal. I was particularly impressed with her creative and inclusive approach to fundraising and campaigning for CoppaFeel! When I was made aware of the Coronation Champions I immediately thought of Emilia and how it would be a great way to recognise all of her hard work."

Coronation Champions will receive a specially designed, official pin, a signed certificate from:- 'Their Majesties' and the chance to attend an official coronation event.

Emilia, who is going on to study for a PGCE in Secondary Maths, will pass on the role of Uni Boob president when she graduates, but she will be continuing to support CoppaFeel! as a:- "Boobette" volunteer.

She added:- "CoppaFeel! holds a huge place in my heart after my grandma survived her breast cancer scare and it is important to me that I am able to raise awareness of something so vital for young people."

Emilia is taking part in a trek along Hadrian's Wall for the charity, alongside celebrities such as:- Blogger and TV Presenter Giovanna Fletcher; you can donate online at:- JustGiving.Com.
