Liverpool Ju-Jitsu legend Sue King celebrates 40 years!

LIVERPOOL Ju-Jitsu legend, Sue King, is celebrating 40 years of martial arts with a huge event at:- The Village Hotel, in Prescot, on 18 November 2023. The highest ranking active Japanese Ju-Jitsu female in the UK, Sue owns Muga Mushin Ryu Ju-Jitsu School in Norris Green; improving the lives of both adults and children.

Highly respected in the martial arts scene, Sue has helped improve the physical and mental wellbeing of many adults and children through Ju-Jitsu over the years. Her School, which is also a CIC, has various classes running Mon to Sat; with countless success stories including getting many youths off the streets and into the gym.

Her celebration event at The Village Hotel will feature a daytime seminar from:- 12pm until 3pm, followed by an evening celebration from 6pm. The seminar will see students travel from across the UK and abroad to attend; with special guest instructors Hanshi John Greenhalgh and Soke Kevin Pell. The evening celebration will include a meal and entertainment; with tickets starting at just £25.

Sue's martial arts journey began at a young age, when she began training in Traditional Ju Jitsu after a difficult upbringing. A victim of bullying and childhood trauma, including losing family members in a tragic house fire and caring for her disabled father, Sue through herself into martial arts; both as a self-defence mechanism and a form of escapism.

Sue said:- "My childhood was very traumatic and martial arts most definitely saved my life. I started out at Croxteth Ju-Jitsu club with Alan Pierpoint, Alan Lynch and John Heynes, then at Lowlands Ju-Jitsu Academy with Kenny Blundell Sensei, and have since had a colourful career. I'm a Shihan, 7th Degree blackbelt, was a Regional Officer for Ju-jitsu in Liverpool and am owner of Team Mushin CIC. I opened Muga Mushin Ryu Ju-Jitsu School just after my father passed away in 2011 and my key aim was to help kids through martial arts the same way it helped me. The idea is to get kids off the streets and into the gym, teaching them values such as discipline, respect, integrity and resilience and there have been some amazing success stories; from kids with special needs to kids quitting drugs and crime."

Sue has become 1 of the leading figures in the local martial arts scene, helping many children and adults along the way. Team Mushin has received countless 5 star reviews, including from many parents who have said the classes have vastly improved their mental and physical wellbeing.

1 parent, Sophie, said:- "My 8 year old daughter Katie has been at Mushin combat academy for over a year now. She goes to Junior Jujitsu once a week. I put Katie into Mushin combat academy to help with her confidence and social skills. Sue is an amazing teacher. she is helpful, passionate and a great role model. Katie looks forward to coming to class every week."

Another, Sara, said:- "I walked into Mushin 9 years ago and was nervous but Sue and the team were so welcoming and great with my boys. My daughter joined, and eventually I had a go and loved it too. The work ethic they put into Mushin is the best; the faith, the trust, the loyalty. It becomes your family in many ways and I would recommend Mushin to anyone."

Sue's approach at Team Mushin is an all encompassing 1; teaching both children and adults the philosophies of Japanese Ju-Jitsu whilst focusing on physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. Philosophies include:- 'if it doesn't challenge you, it won't change you' and 'there is no losing, you either win or you learn.'

Sue said:- "Over the past forty years I have seen many children and adults struggle with mental health and the stigma that went with it, thankfully times have now changed and it's great to see so many people working together through social media to support each other. I too have struggled however I firmly believe that helping others in turn helps ourselves."

Her 40 year career has seen her train in many disciplines; including:- Muay Thai under Colin Heron, Ju Jitsu under Erick Marshall and training in Tai Chi, Escrima and boxing. She is now also a practicing Buddhist after becoming Ordained in 2014. Yet it's her work with children that gives her the most satisfaction and she helped pioneer the Ju Jitsu curriculum within the education system.

Sue said:- "I'm really proud of what I've achieved over the years and to have opened my own School is a dream come true. We've been a CIC since 2015 and always struggled for funding but this year it was great to receive funding from Fight For Peace and Sport England. We want to help as many kids and adults as possible. Our plan for this year is to secure more funding so that we can employ more coaches and ultimately help more people through martial arts. The mental, physical and spiritual benefits are amazing and it can help get people on a good path."

Damien Moore MP thanks local charity volunteers during Volunteers' Week 2023

LOCAL Member of Parliament, Damien Moore, has praised the work of the 5,113 volunteers in Southport and is encouraging others to consider volunteering their time to help their local community. The MP's comments come as Volunteers' Week gets underway. Volunteers' Week is the annual celebration of the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering in their communities. Charity Commission data highlights that there are 5,113 volunteers working in the constituency of Southport, and many more throughout the country. The work of volunteers is vital in allowing local charities to make a difference in their community, the voluntary sector, and society as a whole. Volunteers are at the heart of the charity sector, offering their time and energy to help those in need. This includes charity trustees—most of whom are volunteers. The Charity Commission offers a wide array of guidance and support to help trustees run their charities well so they can improve lives and strengthen society.

Damien Moore, Member of Parliament for Southport, said:- "I have been privileged to visit many outstanding charities in Southport, all of which rely on the dedication of volunteers. I want to thank all those who are giving up their time to support our local charities and congratulate them on everything they are doing to help these great organisations thrive. I would encourage all those who want to give back to their community to volunteer with a local charity."

Orlando Fraser KC, Chair of the Charity Commission, said:- "Amidst tightening economic pressures, Volunteers' Week reminds us that there is more we can give to charity than just money. I would like to extend the Charity Commission's gratitude to volunteers in Southport, who give their time to improve their community, strengthen society and bring people together. Volunteers are the lifeblood of charity, and it is right that they are celebrated and commended for their contribution to our nations."
