National cancer charity Cancer Support UK partners with 'The Wellbeing Project'

CANCER Support UK is delighted to announce its new partnership with global wellbeing consultancy:- 'The Wellbeing Project,' which has been instrumental in creating healthy workplace cultures for over 15 years. With almost 1 million people of working age diagnosed with cancer, organisations increasingly need to be prepared to support those impacted whether directly or indirectly.

The Wellbeing Project's extensive experience in providing sustainable organisational wellbeing solutions makes them ideally placed to raise awareness of Cancer Support UK's innovative Workplace Cancer Support Ambassador training programme.

The Workplace Cancer Support Ambassador training provides a high-level introduction to cancer and cancer treatments and gives individuals in organisations the confidence and skills to support colleagues facing cancer.

Commenting on the new partnership, Mark Guymer, Cancer Support UK's CEO, said:- "The Wellbeing Project's passion for wellbeing in the workplace, aligns perfectly with our values and our determination to improve emotional support at work both for people facing a personal cancer diagnosis and those caring for loved ones with cancer. It is absolutely key to have a deep understanding of human behaviour when working with people living with and beyond cancer. As a cancer charity, we are experts in communicating about cancer and we are confident that, in choosing The Wellbeing Project as our partner, we will have a trusted and knowledgeable ally, who shares our commitment to delivering wellbeing solutions for businesses and their people."

The Wellbeing Project said:- "We are looking forward to working with Cancer Support UK to deliver the Workplace Cancer Support Ambassador Training. This pioneering programme is based on a solid foundation of people's actual lived experience, and we believe it has a vital role to play in creating workplaces where those who are facing cancer feel fully supported."

With at least 85% of employees saying how important it is for them to keep working after a cancer diagnosis, there is an urgent requirement for employers to understand the needs of colleagues affected by cancer and to support them appropriately.

The half day Workplace Cancer Support Ambassador course addresses how to meet those needs. It explores both the physical and emotional side effects of cancer and cancer treatments and provides the necessary skills to have supportive conversations with individuals impacted by cancer. It also supports the Ambassadors themselves to prioritise their own wellbeing as they support others.

In a YouTube video Mark Guymer, CEO of Cancer Support UK, focuses on the importance of talking about cancer in the workplace and the need to train people in organisations to support colleagues facing a cancer diagnosis.

Free suicide prevention training for Liverpool hairdressers and beauticians

HAIRDRESSERS, barbers and beauticians within Liverpool are being invited to hone their listening skills to offer an additional service to clients; as mental health supporters.

Free 'Hair and Beauty Talk' training is being offered by the suicide prevention charity Lions Barber Collective in partnership with Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust, with funding from Liverpool City Council.

It's part of a partnership between Mersey Care's Safe from Suicide team and public health specialists, to engage key members of the community in helping to prevent suicides. 2 half-day training sessions are being held on Monday 2 October at the People's Place in Spellow Lane Liverpool.

Mersey Care's lead for the Liverpool partnership, Dr Claire Iveson said:- "We all have an important role to play in helping to recognise the signs and help prevent suicides. The hair and beauty industry see a wide range of people daily and clients often confide in them; I hope that stylists and beauticians who attend the training will feel better equipped and more confident to have conversations about mental health and to signpost clients to services which can support them."

The Lions Barber Collective founder Tom Chapman said:- "Our aim is to create safe places for people to go and talk about the issues they have with the people they trust, breaking the taboo and showing the world that it is ok to be not ok and to share their problems without fear of judgement."

Co-director of Oriel Close Barbershop in Liverpool, Neil Palin said:- "I'm a mental health 1st aider and I know barbers and beauticians are great listeners and people open up to them in a way they wouldn't do with family and friends. It's important to understand how to respond when people share their thoughts about low mood and depression; choosing the right words can have a massive impact on a person. We're proud to be a safe place for all. For example, we pride ourselves on being an LGBTQ+ friendly barbershop and many people have chosen to come to us for their 1st gender affirming haircut. I would encourage all hairdressers, barbers and other beauty aesthetics professionals to take up the offer of free training, to help recognise when people are suffering; and to know how to respond."

Mersey Care's Safe from Suicide Team have been working in partnership with Liverpool City Council Public Health team since December 2022 to deliver suicide prevention projects in Liverpool.

To book a place on the training on 2 October 2023, from:- 10am to 2pm, go to:- EventBrite.Co.UK. To book on the session, from:- 3pm to 7pm, go to:- EventBrite.Co.UK.
