Emergency Services Expert elected to the Fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences

AN emergency services management expert from Edge Hill University has been made a fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (ACSS) in recognition of his impactful research.

Professor Paresh Wankhade's internationally recognised research centres on providing practical policy recommendations to improve emergency services. His research has been drawn into sharp focus by recent NHS challenges affecting ambulance waiting times and causing prolonged delays for Hospital beds.

The NHS crisis and potential solutions were also the focus of his book, Emergency Services Management, published in January. Among his recommendations for improvement were allocating more funds to the ambulance service, better mental health support for NHS staff, faster implementation of new technologies and an update to the 999 call system.

Professor Wankhade said:- "Becoming a fellow of the ACSS is a great honour. To me, social sciences research means addressing complex challenges, improving society and making life easier, and in terms of the NHS and emergency services, this is more important than ever. Researching emergency services through a social science lens can provide valuable insights into the complex interplay between these services and society, helping to improve their effectiveness, equity, and overall impact on communities. The Academy's connections with colleagues and academics working on similar projects worldwide will undoubtedly aid me as I work to address some of the NHS's major challenges."

The Academy's Fellowship comprises leading social scientists whose expertise covers the breadth of the social sciences, and their practice and research addresses some of the major challenges facing communities, society, places and economies.

Fellows are selected through an independent peer review, which recognises their excellence and impact, including:- their wider contributions to social sciences for public benefit.
