Making sure Merseyside Police is fit to fight crime, now and into the future

MERSEYSIDE'S Police Commissioner and Chief Constable have unveiled a refreshed 12 year plan to continue the transformation of the Force's Stations and buildings focused on ensuring the organisation is fit to fight crime, now and into the future.

The Estate Strategy 2023 to 2035 will continue the work to modernise and update Merseyside Police's Stations and facilities to ensure Officers and staff are in the right places and best equipped to serve communities across the Region.

The plan encompasses some major developments including:- the completion of the refurbishment of Merseyside Police's busiest operational Station, St Anne Street, due to be officially re-opened later this month.

It also includes major new Police Hubs in:- St Helens, Wirral, Knowsley and new Police Stations in Southport and Newton-le-Willows, all of which are due to be completed in the next 5 years.

During the next 12 years, more than:- £21.6m is expected to be recouped from the sale of 11 old and unused Stations, including:- Merseyside Police's former headquarters in Canning Place which is due to go on the market shortly. It also includes the sale of Stations on Smithdown Lane, and in:- Bromborough, Maghull and Ainsdale.

By selling outdated buildings that are no longer fit for purpose and replacing them with state of the art new Stations, it is anticipated that a further:- £2.37m will be saved on the annual cost of running the Police estate:- helping to protect Police Officer posts.

Nearly:- £589,000 a year is already being saved on the organisation's running costs following the move from Canning Place and another office in Brunswick Dock to Merseyside Police's state of the art new headquarters, Rose Hill, which officially opened for business in October 2021, with a further:- £140,000 being saved thanks to the reduced cost of running the Operational Command Centre in Speke.

The refreshed strategy will also help the drive to make Merseyside Police the most sustainable Force in the country. In the past 8 years, the organisation has already reduced its carbon reduction by 39%, saved:- £128,000 by fitting solar panels and a further:- £200,000 by embedding a reuse policy.

Merseyside's Police Commissioner Emily Spurrell said:- "We are determined to ensure Merseyside Police is fit to fight crime now and into the future. To do that, it's vital we provide state of the art Stations and facilities for our Officers and staff to put them in the best position to serve our communities. This ambitious plan is designed to build on the hugely positive work of the last 8 years which has seen our fantastic new headquarters, Rose Hill, open for business, as well as the very effective Operational Command Centre in Speke and a major new patrol new hub on Edge Lane. There's also been major refurbishments of:- Bebington, Mather Avenue and Halewood Stations. All these projects are already making a huge difference:- saving money, ensuring we are more sustainable, and equipping Officers and staff with the right working environment to best serve our communities. Crime doesn't standstill though, so nor can we. This bold strategy sets out how we will continue to transform our estate, creating better, brighter, greener spaces for our staff which will enable them to flourish and support my priority of delivering Proactive Policing for the people of Merseyside for many years to come."

Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said:- "The communities of Merseyside should expect to receive the highest quality of service from Merseyside Police. In order to have the most efficient Police Force it is vital that our Officers and staff can work in buildings that are fit for purpose and suitable for policing in the 21st Century. This ongoing investment in our estate means that we can continue to deliver a cost effective and high-quality service while supporting the wellbeing of all our Officers and staff. Merseyside Police remain committed to putting the communities of Merseyside at the heart of everything we do."

Merseyside Police's estate currently consists of 74 buildings, 2 of which were built pre-1920, and 9 which opened their doors before 1945. Many of these ageing buildings are inefficient and expensive to maintain and major repairs are required to ensure they are effective and efficient.

Building on all the work from the last 8 years, the refreshed Estates Strategy is underpinned by the core principles of sustainability, social value, affordability and supporting operational policing.

It also supports the recent changes made to Merseyside Police's operating model following the Community 1st Operational Review (CFOR). Fully implemented in September, the review initiated a series of changes designed to put a greater focus on place, with more dedicated resources into each of the Region's boroughs and more investment in the teams that tackle the issues that matter most to local people.

How Miss Great Britain's Miss Liverpool 2023 plans to take her leading Primary School Dance Initiative nationwide

WHEN 24 year old Brittany Feeney brought home Miss Great Britain's Miss Liverpool 2023 title in July of this year, it was the culmination of hard work, determination, and her own personal brand of community spirit. Brittany has already proved to be a huge success in the world of pageants, after winning Miss Chester in 2018 and then Miss Blackpool in 2019. However, it is the Miss Liverpool title which is so meaningful to this Maghull beauty; she graduated with a 1st Class Honours Degree in Dance and Performance Arts from the City's famous LIPA University, in 2022, and can't wait to represent the city Region at the finals of Miss Great Britain 2023 in Leicester later this month.

It was the world of dance which led Brittany to pageants - although confident on stage, she was shy away from the limelight, and so her mum thought that joining in a teen pageant might be just the ticket for her daughter, and she was right! Straight away Brittany enjoyed the chance to make new friends, build her skills set and get involved in meaningful charitable work.

Brittany already feels honoured to be working with North West Cancer Research as an Ambassador, where she regularly visits Schools to help them deliver health and wellbeing workshops. During a recent visit to Knotty Ash Primary School she loved getting the pupils involved in healthy eating activities.

As a fully qualified Primary School Dance Teacher, Brittany's work also gave her the idea to create her own platform:- KIIDS, or Kindness and Inclusion in Dance. The programme allows Brittany to deliver exciting dance workshops, where so many children who are unable to access private dance classes get to enjoy all of the wellbeing benefits of movement, connection, and fun!

As Brittany explains in her own words:- "I'm so excited to be representing Liverpool at the finals of Miss Great Britain 2023. Of course, I love the glamorous side of such a fantastic event, and it has given me the opportunity to make meaningful friends. My mum, who is my greatest supporter, was a leading beauty title winner in the 1980's, and she is still close friends with many of her contemporaries. My early experiences of dance and performance really brought me out of my shell, and my pageant journey has given me the opportunity to take that confidence into the rest of my world off stage. It certainly helped me in my degree studies at LIPA. I am so lucky my education there gave me a world-class opportunity to learn from the very best. Winning the Miss Liverpool 2023 title has given me further opportunities to get involved in local community participation, from working with Liverpool Women's Hospital, with foodbank initiatives, and now with the tremendous North West Cancer Research. It is dance and performance, which is my real passion, which allows me to bring that joy to so many youngsters. I deliver a varied programme to them, and have learned that once they feel free to get involved, the girls and boys in my classes really take to movement, especially if it includes cheerleading exercises and cool routines. The free-dance part of the classes, where the pupils can just move as they wish at the end of the lesson, really sees them go for it! And I know from my own experience that as well as being a great type of physical exercise, it is also a form of self-expression and helps boost mental wellbeing. My dream is to take my KIIDS initiative nationwide if I am successful at the finals of Miss Great Britain. How you look, what you wear and the way you present yourself of course matters, but it is the service you bring to the table that counts most of all. It is absolutely the ethos at the heart of Miss Great Britain, and I would relish the opportunity to take all of my experience and deliver this new platform of mine all over the country. Personally, I am also so proud to be representing Liverpool. Winning the title itself was a dream come true for me. I decided for that event to wear red in every section, as it is a colour that is so linked to the city, and it must have brought me good luck as I got to bring home that coveted Miss Liverpool 2023 sash and crown! I can promise you that if my next 1 has Miss Great Britain 2023 written on it, I will represent both my city, and the rest of Great Britain, with a huge sense of pride - I would consider it both an honour and a privilege."

Brittany represented Liverpool at Miss Great Britain 2023, which took place at Leicester Athena, Queen Street, Leicester, on:- Friday 20 October 2023. For more information about this event:- MissGreatBritainOfficial.Co.UK.
