DE&S boosts skills growth by recruiting hundreds of new apprentices and graduates

DEFENCE Equipment and Support (DE&S) is recruiting close to 300 new apprentices and graduates through 14 different schemes. With a range of development programmes beginning in 2024, work and training options are available in:- Bristol, Manchester and Portsmouth, with opportunities to be based at other DE&S locations around the UK as apprentices and graduates progress through their schemes.

Successful applicants could work in:- Finance and Accounting, Electro Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Corporate Services, Project Delivery, Digital Technology or Operational Delivery. Chartered Management Degree Apprenticeships are also available.

Eli Mei, Aerospace Engineering Degree Apprentice, said:- "As an apprentice, I've completed placements with different teams across the business, helping them support and deliver projects. Studying and working at the same time is really rewarding because l get to see what I've learned at university put into practice, which really helps cement my knowledge. Being able to support the UK Armed Forces is a big reason I enjoy working for DE&S. I've been able to work with front-line military personnel 1st hand, both remotely and at various bases across the country."

DE&S is the procurement arm of the Ministry of Defence, working closely with our industry partners to equip and support UK Armed Forces around the globe while working to keep the UK safe and help it prosper.

Our programme of work ranges from jets and warships through to armoured vehicles and field kitchens. We employ more than 11,500 civil servants, military personnel and private contractors across more than 150 locations around the world.

Scott Murray, DE&S Director HR, said:- "Our people remain at the core of everything we do, and we continue to invest in skills and learning to ensure DE&S delivers the operational advantage our Armed Forces need. It's vitally important we ensure we have the right people in the right place working together to deliver today and tomorrow. We have a large number of exciting career opportunities available across a wide range of roles. It's about developing the future leaders of our organisation; spotting the potential and the unique talents of our apprentices and graduates and helping them shape their own path."

Working for DE&S comes with many benefits, including:- flexible working, an excellent civil service pension scheme and generous leave entitlements. The vast majority of our apprentices and graduates go on to forge successful careers within DE&S or the wider Ministry of Defence.

The 1st 10 apprentice and graduate schemes for 2024 are now live for applications, with 4 more to follow by the end of October 2023.

North West Ambulance Service joins the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower

THE North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) is proud to announce its support for the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower during National Hidden Disabilities Week. The Sunflower aims to raise awareness and assist individuals with hidden disabilities that are not immediately apparent to others.

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a simple yet powerful symbol that signifies that the wearer has a hidden disability or condition that may not be readily visible, such as autism, anxiety, sensory processing disorders, or chronic illnesses. By wearing the Sunflower, individuals signal to others that they may require additional support, understanding, or patience in various situations.

Director of Finance and Hidden Disabilities Ally Carolyn Wood says:- "At NWAS, we are dedicated to providing compassionate care to all members of our community. By supporting the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, we are taking a significant step toward ensuring that those with hidden disabilities receive the assistance and respect they deserve. It is vital for us to recognise that not all disabilities are visible, and we are committed to creating a more inclusive and understanding society."

As part of NWAS's overarching strategy to enhance inclusivity and promote community support, the service is encouraging its staff and the public to be aware of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower symbol. When you encounter someone wearing a Sunflower lanyard or pin, here's what you can do to make a positive impact:-

Be Patient:- Understand that the person wearing the Sunflower may require extra time or assistance in various situations, such as at a Hospital, supermarket, or public transportation.

Offer Assistance:- Politely ask if the person needs any assistance or support. Be respectful and sensitive to their preferences; some individuals may prefer not to accept help.

Respect Boundaries:- Respect the individual's privacy and personal space. It's essential not to pry or make assumptions about their condition.

Raise Awareness:- Share information about the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower with friends, family, and colleagues to increase understanding and empathy within the community.

By actively supporting the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, NWAS aims to promote a more inclusive and compassionate society where everyone, regardless of their disabilities, can access the help and support they need.
